Short rhyming verse offering a pragmatic view of romance.
What a wretched dance

We have termed romance!

Yet we crave the taste

Of this poison-laced

Lie of love we drink

To, the faster, sink.

I'll share a secret

If you will keep it

For I've learned so much.

Indeed there's a touch

Of truth to the thought

That mortals were wrought

Without intention.

No god's invention

But by Chaos blessed.

Our laws made in jest.

Love - The grandest lie.

And I'll tell you why.

It drags and degrades

With ragged charades

Of passionate bliss.

It laughs at that kiss.

It sends you friendly

Enemies like me.

Who'll charm and seduce

And expertly use

An arsenal of

The trappings of love

Mixed with sex appeal

Your lover to steal.

I've done it before.

Fiancées galore

Await my return.

I cause them to yearn

As you've never dreamed.

If the truth be gleamed

Let it speak rightly.

I serve Aphrodite.

In her name I'll please

Your woman with ease.

To teach you to trust

Not in love, but lust.
