I Had to Sing

I had to sing at Those Rescued,
(an orphanage of somber mood),
where old adults would laugh and steal
and so great anger I would feel
about behavior that was crude.

I’d sit alone at times and brood
in lieu of happy interlude.
Yet then to have my evening meal
I had to sing.

Each supper was an attitude
as I was bound in servitude
by those who imposed this ordeal,
(for sure the bane of mean is real.)
And thus for me to get my food
I had to sing.

The Rondeau is composed of 15 lines, eight to ten syllables each,
divided stanzaically into a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet. The refrain
consists of the first few words or the entire first line of the first stanza,
and it recurs as the last line of both the second and third stanzas. Two
rhymes guide the music of the Rondeau, whose rhyme scheme is as follows:
