The Monarch
By Alexis Shay
Life is a delicate thing. In a moment, something once beautiful and strong can disappear, as ashes to the wind, with only sweet memories and tears left in its wake. It occurred two years ago, when the sweet doe-eyed girl was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Like Atlas, with the cerulean and emerald world upon his shoulders, she remained standing. Accompanied by the sandy-haired soccer player called Jared, she enjoyed her fleeting years with every fiber of her being. Unlike those of us who had many years to live, The Monarch forgave life’s many trivialities, and despite her short seventeen years, she watched the world from a place high on a strand of wild grass, in a field of gold, with her orange and black wings spread, ready to fly into the cloudless azure sky.
