A man apart from humanity. Even his own.
Father Thomas sat in the confessional every Friday evening from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. He always kept some light reading in his side to pass the time, since it seemed the confessions of his parishioners had been coming much less often than they used to. As a matter of fact, he'd been able to finish several books in recent weeks, and had even started reading a trilogy now, since he felt certain he'd have the time. He'd started on the second book already, and the story was moving along quite nicely by 5:30. He heard the door open and shut on the parishioners' side and felt the familiar weight of someone taking a seat. He slid the grating door open, and waited for the other person to speak.

"Bless me father, for I have sinned." The voice was a smooth, deep baritone he didn't recognize. He couldn't see the man's features clearly, but what he was able to make out was unfamiliar as well. The man went on, "I don't remember the last time I confessed, but it was many years ago, I assure you." There was a thin trace of humor in the man's voice as he spoke, that much was evident to the priest's practiced ear. He decided to mirror the man's own style and said simply, "Do go on, my son."

That brought a light chuckle from the penitent, "I hope you've got a little time, padre. Like I said, it's been a long time since I sat here." Thomas sat back and chuckled a little himself, "I'm not going anywhere, and business has been slow for awhile. I don't think we need to worry about a line forming." That elicited a genuine laugh from the other man, who sat back in the seat, crossing his legs. He crossed his hands in his lap and continued, "I suppose it started a long time ago. I had what one might consider a crisis of faith. I said a prayer one day that I think changed my life from that point onward." That caught the priest's attention. He could tell the man was being very open with him, and he was intrigued. "What makes you think that, my son?" "Because of the nature of the prayer, padre. I simply placed myself available to whatever powers that exist greater than me. I pledged myself to be an instrument of the universe. Nothing has been the same since."

As he fell silent, he began to think back. He hadn't thought about it for a long time until recently.
