channeling Old Man Willow
you found me today,
by my creek where
I sink my roots,
a lattice tangle
that guards damp soil
as my leafy veil
cloaks this lonely waterway.

it’s mine, you know,
a stewardship
given me
when a branch fell upstream
and flowed here,
catching in a snag—
and I grew.

my heartwood is empty,
friendless.
I drink my water greedily
waiting for company—
here you are!—
see me weep whip-thin branches,
bent low
swaying against your head
as you pass inside,
touch my soil.

I’ve twisted into myself,
frozen for an eternal moment,
but you know with visceral certainty,
don’t you?—

I have an intrinsic ability.
I can unwind my wooden form
and walk when starlight
awakens me,
pausing again
when your eyes find me.

I wait for a time
when my roots find you,
drink you dry,
and you’ll be mine.

forever.
