Milk entry - 67 words

The dog lay unblinking beside the still body of her last pup. She hadn’t the strength now to lick it, to groom its tiny head and mourn.

She last ate days ago; it ached to move. She had willed herself to give life, to nurse her pups, but they left her one by one.

Slowly, she crawled deeper under the decaying deck and curled into the shadows.
