A man thinking about his wife.
It started with a glance.
Your eyes caught mine from across the streets, the lights brightly lit.
the moment was gone as soon as it had come
and I didn’t think anything special of it.

The next few days were hectic and busy.
I did not come around at the same time.
but then one fateful day I decided to go home early.
And there you were, smiling, blushing, your gaze caught in mine.

Curious, I made sure to leave work at the same time the next day.
and you were there.
the next few weeks it became a routine.
I started looking forward to the time I got to leave,
moments where I did not think of you were rare.

Until one day my joy of seeing you was abruptly disturbed; you were not there.
An entire week went by and I told myself not to feel so upset.
For we had never spoken, nor made any indication of wanting to.
So please, my love, imagine my surprise as you shyly took place beside me and said:

“I saw you looking around. Were you… perhaps… looking for me?”
I looked up and got lost in the sea green of your eyes.
It took a while before I managed to awkwardly answer you with a barely audible “maybe”
You smiled as if you’d just won the most amazing prize.

Conversation was practically non-existent at first.
but as the days went by and our shyness warmed, we soon found ourselves conversing and discussing all the deeper questions of life.
Weeks became months, our commute dates evolved to marriage.
I was on top of the world, you made me the happiest man on earth by becoming my wife.

A few years later our healthy baby boy was born.
I must thank you for the most precious gift you have given me: fatherhood.
Now I stand here and make you my final promise.
I will be strong for him, I will stand where you stood.

Once more I let my eyes catch yours, even though I know they can no longer catch mine.
The picture is but a flat, soulless representation of who I once knew.
Gently I place the fresh white roses as my tears stain the grave beneath.
Thank you for the time you chose to spend with us, we will always love you.
