Reopens October 2024 |
A huge thank you to Dee for the beautiful orange ribbon that adorns this contest. In the spirit of Dia de los Muertos and Samhain, I wanted to create something that honors those who have passed on. Since we are all writers here, paying tribute through our writing is one of the best gifts we can give a loved one. So, for this contest, I would like you to pen a non-fictional poem and/or a short story about someone important in your life that has passed on. Remember, this is a celebration of their life, which means the main focus of your entry must be how their life affected you in a positive way, rather than focusing on the sadness from the loss. Contest Rules Your story or poem must be newly written for this contest. No line or word count limit on poetry, but stories must not exceed 5,000 words. If you submit poetry, it may be formed or free verse. If it is a particular form, make sure to give an explanation at the bottom of your poem. Your story or poem must be non-fiction, paying respects to a loved one, pet, or friend who is no longer living. Non-fiction short stories must include all the elements of a short story, including dialogue. I want you to show me how this person or pet impacted your life in a positive way, rather than just tell me. Rating must not exceed 18+. You may submit two entries if you choose to do so, but if you do, one must be a poem and the other a short story. You may not submit two stories or two poems. Entry must be submitted in bitem format or Entry format (if you aren't sure how, see "Video: Linking to an Item" for directions) Editing is allowed after entry has been submitted, but not after the deadline. Contest start date begins October 1st and ends at 11:59 p.m. on October 31st. Your poem and/or story may be a stand alone item or an entry in a book collection. All donations will go to the Distorted Minds Contest bank. Since this is a once a year contest, I figured they could share spaces. If you would like to make a donation, you may do so by posting in the forum. Those who donate 40k or more will receive either a merit badge they don't have or a 10k ribbon.
