Cowboy Poetry
The Colour of Latigo.

Way back in the sixties when I was just a child of five.
Pa Ranched on a Mountain top just east of the sole divide.
Spent the wonder years of my childhood there from the day old Lou arrived.
Looking like an old dog who'd seen better days
As he rode up through the misty haze and the sunlight danced with the morning dew.

An He'd say..........

Old Cowboys never die when their time runs out they just ride away.
Cause there's a place where old Cowboys go.
Where leather never cracks, it hardly ever snows.
And the sunsets the colour of Latigo.

Cold winter evenings Lou'd stare at the flames in the fire.
Sipping on southern Comfort slowly getting higher and higher.
Then he told tails of chaparral and sage, how he rode shotgun on the Wickenburg Stage.
Showed us kids how to give, taught us all to ride.
How to take a fall and swallow our pride and come whatever, time still marches on.

Then just last Springtime Pa called to say old Lou'd gone.
Warming a calf by the bunkhouse fire, guess he just quietly passed on.
Pa said old Saint Peter ain't seen nothing like Lou, he'll show em' all a thing or two.
Bet he was looking like an old dog who'd seen better days.
As he rode up through the misty haze while the sunlight danced with the morning dew.

But I know.....

Old Cowboys never die when their time runs out they just ride away.
Cause there's a place where old Cowboys go.
Where leather never cracks, it hardly ever snows.
And the sunsets the colour of Latigo.
