short story |
She lies on her bed cuddling with the remaining piece of her life, a ragged brown teddy bear she calls Mr. Snuggles. I asked her to glimpse in the mirror and tell me what she saw. I felt so disheartened as she told me that the reflection was not hers. The reflection was a stranger, a nobody. She also implied that she was not beautiful, nor special. She further stated that she was a mistake, and never should have been born. Her only friends were loneliness and emptiness. Instantly a vision came to me. I saw a life unfold before my eyes, it was as if I was watching a movie. I saw the bruises, the pain, how she cried out but no one could hear her. Something sharp caught my eye, it was a blade. I literally felt the blade slide across her skin, blood freely flowing, masking the pain. I wanted to block it out, but couldn't. She was very lonely, scared, and lost. I watched her letting herself go, dying from the inside out. No more pain, no more heartache. I tried to grab her hand, pull her up but she was falling fast. I saw her soul being carried away, with deep despair in my heart. I suddenly snapped out of my trance, and gazed upon this frail, young girl and was at a loss for words. Her name is Katie, and she is the bravest person I know. Silence has built an awful wreckage within the confines of her mind. She has lived in a constant state of melancholy. She is despondent and feels that her purpose will never be found in this world. I know that before havoc became her existence, she dreamed of having wings and flying to the stars and disappearing. This explains her rash decision to acquire a gun. Thankfully the gun misfired, and a concerned neighbor sought to find the source of the gunshot. The bitterness of her tears was nothing new to this young girl. According to Katie day after the day, the air around her gets thicker, and it is getting harder for her to breathe, the smoke is suffocating. She looks to her inner voices to calm her fears, but now those voices are fading, becoming a distant memory. I watched her intently. Gently I reached for her hand and held it for several minutes until she fell into a deep slumber. Darkness killing her thoughts, and bringing a comforting paralysis to her life. Confusion feeds like a savage inside her, inner demons running rampant. I have to help this girl, she is terrified and reaching out to me, somehow we seem to be intertwined. Scary when you think about it, you know? |
