Puppy Treats

It waited downwind sniffing its prey from above. The cougar, walking below, sensed the attack too late to survive, but inflicted damage. The shapeshifter fed hungrily on raw meat and was sated. The blood moon set. A kindly couple found a wounded puppy alongside a country road, and took it to the shelter. Days later, a young family adopted the healing puppy, and it licked the face of the toddler. Soon, it thought, soon.
