Nature's Survivalists

When winter comes, the squirrels choose
to snuggle in their dens and snooze
inside their snug and homely tree.
If they could speak, they would agree
that ice and snow aren't pleasant news.

As skies take on their darkest hues,
those clever critters all refuse
to venture out where we can see
when winter comes.

Let’s give those climbing rats their dues —
although they've neither scarves nor shoes,
compared to us, they're warm and free
to gorge on hoarded nuts with glee.
No wonder humans get the blues
when winter comes.
