Inner Demons

As I lay awake in bed
The many voices in my head
Playfully hurl stones at my windows
Dredging up old memories and sorrows

I ask them to be careful
Mind you, not to scold them
I figure, let them have their fun
A broken window never hurt anyone

It does become tiresome though
To replace broken windows
These new ones, you see
Are never as good as the old

It used to take many stones
To break through my windows
But to cut costs and save time
The new panes are often thin of mind

These days I've come to realize
My home no longer has windows
Just walls of glass ready to shatter
With any toss of an unkind stone
