On October 29, 1993 I tried heroin for the first time and flirted with it til I stopped.
The first time I tried that boy...
Two ladies shared my company.
One ask me if I would "chase dragons" with them...
"Try it once...it won't hurt...you will see.

I was hesitant at first...
But the ladies disrobed themselves.
When I saw their naked bodies...
All my inhibitions were shelved.

That boy joined us on silver foil...
It danced on a lighter's flame.
It changed into Lucifer...
That old dragon of lore and ill fame.

It made my arms and legs soft...
But my manhood and tongue firm.
That boy wasn't so bad...
As far as I was concerned.

That boy and I you see...
Would have an on and off love affair...
When my mother hovered between life and death...
That boy was even there.

It was there in Gator Country...
The home of my Bulldogs' enemy.
As my mother fought to live...
In the hospital near the university.

That boy was there for me...
My sisters and family meant nothing at all.
I felt if my mother would die...
That I was going to fall.

However, mama was strong as metal...
For she closed the door on waiting Death.
She would see her third generation...
Open their eyes and take a breath.

I would shake that boy's hug on my person...
To love it and mama at the same time would be wrong.
But the urge to be with that boy...
Would occasionally come along.

Me and that boy would be on and off...
An "affair" of love and hate.
It would comfort me in times of stress and pain...
Court appearances, deadlines and due dates.

Can't fuck with it now, you see...
Don't need some dirty piss.
Nevertheless that boy meant something to me...
The only boy I ever loved; sometimes I truly miss.
