Conjured from the fire — released,
the Spirit of the Big Orange Squash
sputters, coalesces in whirls
of embers rising to devour the night
with a whoosh of hiss-and-sizzle
while the veil that separates us weakens,
when in the pumpkin patch the Dead arise
each pop and cackle a spark of memory
to provide the living with some light.
'Step here, not there, watch out!"
they whisper, whistle, crack,
"We dead can never hurt you.
Shhhh... Be wary of the Living."
As the Spirit nods in silence,
the Big Orange Squash grins back.
