Questions

Sandy sat at her desk, quietly as always. She never wanted to draw attention. She wasn’t shy so much, as not one wanting to be in the spotlight. She was happy to join in, she just didn’t want to be the center of attention.

Mrs. Gray was up front teaching a lesson. Sandy rarely participated in this activity. Mrs. Gray would ask a question and see how many students already knew the answer, or thought they did. It was fun. When students already knew the answer, especially if they were the only one, it was very exciting for that student. When someone thought they knew, but they were wrong, Mrs. Gray always made it fun getting to the real answer, and always without embarrassing the person who had the wrong answer.

As Mrs. Gray asked the third question of the day, Sandy’s mind suddenly said, “I know the answer.” Smiling to herself, she looked up to see who else knew. Nobody was raising their hand.

Mrs. Gray was doing her teasing part, “Come on, I bet somebody knows. Or maybe somebody wants to take a guess? Think about it for another minute.”

Sandy looked around, everyone was thinking, hard too from the looks on their faces. Nobody was coming up with anything, not even guesses! She knew the answer. She knew it was right too! But she didn’t want to stand up and have everyone look at her.

“Last chance!” Mrs. Gray called out.

Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, Sandy raised her hand slowly.

“Sandy!” Mrs. Gray said, “You know the answer?”

“I do,” Sandy said, sadly.

Mrs. Gray said, “Why do you sound so sad?”

Feeling every eye in the room upon her, she had to admit, “I’m afraid I’ve just forgotten the question...”
