My DNA

I signed up with that Ancestry;
they have my DNA.
And now I’m waiting patiently
to see what they will say.

Well, patient may not be the word
to frame my state of mind.
In fact, I’m feeling quite concerned
to see what they may find.

Oh, I know who my parents are
and all my siblings, too.
But what if someone else turns up,
someone I never knew?

There may be someone way out there
that I don’t know about.
Someone that I’m related to
and just am finding out.

That’s kind of awkward, don’t you think,
and scary in some way,
if there’s some wicked dude out there
who shares my DNA.

I watch all of those TV shows,
the ones about true crime.
That’s how they catch some criminals.
It happens all the time.

Who knows who’s lurking with my genes
and maybe looks like me?
And now he’ll know who I am too.
How dreadful would that be?

I never should have sent that in.
What good can come of it?
If something bad comes out of this,
I’ll surely have a fit.

Hey, look at what I just received.
I’m in their system now.
I’ll have to grit my teeth real tight
and get through this somehow.

Well, this might not be all that bad.
So let’s see what they say.
There may be some nice folks I’ll find
who share my DNA.

Yeah, maybe I’ve been worrying
and there’s no need to fret.
I just might find some relatives
that I have never met.

Who knows whom I’m related to?
I’ll have to look and see.
There may be some rich guy out there
who looks a lot like me.
