A musically-inspired challenge with writing prompts posted twice a month. Prizes included!

Welcome to the One-Line Lyric Challenge!

Every month, I will post two songs: One with a lyric prompt (start of the month) and one as a song prompt (middle of the month).
Entries will be due at the end of the month for either prompt.

Lyric Prompt: Write a poem or story and include the prompted lyric line somewhere in your work, word for word. It's up to you how you want to incorporate the line. Please bold the line to make it easier for me to find. It's OK if your work is loosely inspired by the song, but try not to make it too similar or copy the song. If you don't like the provided lyric prompt, you can pick a different line from the lyrics to incorporate (only one line).

Song Prompt: Write a poem or story inspired by the song. You do not need to include any lyrics directly, and in some cases there may not be any lyrics. Just write whatever the music or lyrics inspires.

Please link back to the challenge somewhere in your entry using {item:lyric} and post your entry as a link in the comments here.

The Prizes: 5K GPs, a merit badge of my choosing, plus a guaranteed review of your entry.
If you enter both prompts that month, you will get double the prizes!

Feel free to listen and comment on the music or other people's entries, even if you don't plan to enter the challenge! There may be gift points in store for people who are active in the comments or share / promote the challenge.

This will be the last prompt for a little while. I've said before, summers are for endings. All the major changes in my life have happened over the summer, and this is far from an exception. In this case, an ending without a beginning. Or, an ending without an end?

When I figure my own life out, this challenge will eventually return. I'm sorry that I can't give a timeline for that.

Running through hell, heaven can wait.

Song Prompt: "Long Road to Ruin" by the Foo Fighters

Lyrics:

Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics.

Probably a new artist to most of you, and definitely a new song. Orla Gartland is an Irish singer, songwriter and musician with a very unique style that's hard to describe or pin down. She got her start on YouTube at the ripe old age of 13, and has really come into her own and found her style. There's something I just love about a clean melodic voice with heavy electric guitar behind.

This song was released in October of last year as part of an album of the same name.

Lyric Prompt: "I'm not as tough as I look"

This one is dedicated to my Granny D, who just passed away last Saturday (6/28)-- a year and a half after my Grampa D. After a long battle with dementia, she is at peace now. I hope they are together again, where ever they are.

"Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" by the Andrew's Sisters.

Lyrics:

Lyric Prompt: Sit down under the apple tree (Prompt closed)
(Feel free to change the tense if it's easier to work with.)

If you don't like the given prompt, you can chose another line from the lyrics above.

This popular song, written by keyboardist Eric Stefani and performed by Gwen Stefani, is actually a play on Disneyland's Magic Kingdom. The intro is the safety announcement for the Matterhorn. It's in reference to a tragic incident in 1984, when someone stood up on the ride and was decapitated. I find it still relevant today.

Lots of imagery to work with, so happy writing.

Song Prompt: "Tragic Kingdom" by No Doubt (Prompt closed)

Lyrics:

Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics.

This month, we have the smooth tones of a mutli-talented singer-slash-rapper-slash-actress.
I got my education from the University of California, and my miseducation from Lauryn Hill.

Probably should issue a warning about the potential for musical whiplash here at the One-Line Lyric Challenge.

"Everything is Everything" by the Lauryn Hill

I'm sitting here with the windows open after a thunderstorm just rolled through, writing this while an Eagles cover band plays a concert across the street. Wasn't expecting a free concert tonight, but here we are. Didn't even have to get dressed. And they're quite good. Almost thought it was actually the Eagles playing for a minute.

According to the prophecy, there's gonna be a heartache tonight. Yours? Mine? Unclear.

I had different song in mind for this song prompt, but I had to do an Eagles song. I had no choice.
You understand.

Song Prompt: "Desperado" by The Eagles (Prompt closed)

Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics.

As promised, something a bit lighter. This song was actually nominated for a Grammy in 1997, although it didn't win. Rumor is it came to Joan in a dream. I just love the beat and the bluesy guitar and harmonies. Hopefully you will too!

"Spider Web" by the Joan Osborne

Lyrics:

Lyric Prompt: "(Don't forget your) string of pearls" (Prompt closed)

Include the above line somewhere in your entry. Words in parentheses are optional.

Singer-songwriter Vienna Teng answers the question:
What if the fence turned around, and Americans were fleeing to Mexico for a better life?

Not as fictional as it seemed when it was written.

It's better performed live, so that's what I went with.

Song Prompt: "No Gringo" by Vienna Teng (Prompt closed)

Lyrics:

Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics.

Some sage advice and beautiful tones written by Emily Sailers of the Indigo Girls, an American folk-rock duo. She and Amy Ray met in elementary school and formed the Indigo Girls at Emory University in 1985. They have a strong Native American influence and themes in their music. This one has a little bit of a Hispanic feel to the guitar.

Although they are a duo, they write songs separately and have their own distinct styles.

"Everything In Its Own Time" by the Indigo Girls

Lyrics:

Lyric Prompt: "We own nothing" OR "Nothing is ours" (Prompt closed)

Include either of the above lines somewhere in your entry.
If you don't like the given prompt, you can chose another line from the lyrics above.
