The Promise

From such a young age, Sarah was promised
To have a very special celebration on her 23rd birthday.
“I was that age when I met your father,
And I want all my children to have a special 23rd year!”
The youngest of the bunch, Sarah was witness
To five other parties, each bigger than the last.
Several months prior to her own promised day,
Sarah’s mother unexpectedly perished.
But on the date of her special birthday,
Sarah was joined at her mother’s manicured plot
By siblings and father and cousins alike.
Her 23rd birthday celebration was spent
In the company of gravestones;
It was the greatest party by far.
Though no one else noticed, Sarah could see
A specter spectating this momentous occasion.
Her mother played witness to a promise fulfilled.
