A man wonders how he got into this mess
"This place is a mess," he said to himself, looking around his apartment. "I should probably hire a wife. Or marry a housekeeper. One of those things."
Cody Hayes didn't really have a way with words. He kept to himself, mostly, which probably affected his ability to convey himself properly. Since he spent so much time alone, he was out of practice. He didn't understand social cues. He had very little confidence in his ability to form relationships.
The floor in his apartment needed a thorough vacuuming. The toilet needed brushing and the help of a powerful cleaning agent to break down the buildup in the bowl. The garbage can in the kitchen had all sorts of paper refuse around it from the times it had overflowed. The only reason he took the trash out regularly was because of the smell. Dirty dishes lined the countertop by the sink. Further inspection would find all sorts of dirt and filth in the various cracks and crevices.
Why did he let things get this way? How did he go from being a young man with such promise to a middle-aged guy all alone, living in filthy conditions?
He didn't have an answer for that. He didn't even have the first clue how to get out of it.
