Do you know what sucks most about widowhood?
It’s not the loneliness; you can have family friends or meet new people. It’s not the grief; you can overcome it, go to support groups and it lessens in time. It’s not even the loss of the intimate relationship, you can find alternatives.
The one thing that sucks the most, the single most and the simplest of actions. The one thing that sucks the most in a widow or widower’s life is the absence of a romantic, loving kiss.
For almost 49 years, my wife and I were adamant kissers. I’m not talking about the intimate times. We kissed good morning and good night each day. We kissed when one of us left the house; whether for work or play, an hour, a day, a month or I left on a cruise (I was a Navy sailor). We kissed while passing in the hall. We kissed in celebrations of births, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and special occasions. We kissed in times of loss to comfort each other. When I was in the hospital and she came to visit the first thing we did was kiss. The same when she was in the hospital, I kissed her. We kissed coming and going. Now comes the realization that you will never feel that kind of passion again. You may kiss your children, your grandchildren, other relatives or friends. But, if you’re my age, 70, your time of knowing the feel of a kiss of love is over. I realized that is the one thing I have missed the most since losing my wife on July 12th, 2023 after seeing a couple kissing each other passionately on television. I turned off the tv, buried my face in my pillow and cried and told my wife how much I missed her. I sent her a kiss to heaven, I hope God gives it to her.
