How
to Feel More Motivated About Writing
If you feel like your writing is getting dull, or you feel like you
haven't been producing your best work, then this article is for
you!
1. Set Small Goals
Try breaking up your writing into
smaller chunks. If you are writing a fictional story, make a goal to
write half a page a day. Word goals are VERY helpful.
2. BEEF IT UP!
When you see the
finish line, pause, and go to the first page of your writing and BEEF
your story up! Add a descriptive paragraph or two! Make your
paragraphs convey your information eloquently! If you are writing a
kindergarten textbook, it is ok to write, "Jan ran, Jan ran good."
If you are writing a COLLEGE level textbook, you could say something
like, "Jan ran as fast as she could, her feet patted the ground
softly, each step sending a small tremor through her leg." (writing
in Microsoft word is more helpful, in my opinion, than on paper with
a pen or pencil)
3. Make your
writing a habit!
If you are an
inconsistent writer, like me, consider setting a routine for when you
write. Writing at the same time EVERY day will turn writing at say, 4
pm a habit.
4. Take breaks!
Hey buddy, this
article is NOT trying to make you feel like there is a drill sergeant
yelling in your ear telling you to continually write until your
fingers fall off! Pace yourself! Write for 15 minutes then break for
10! Give your fingers a break! You deserve it!
5. Please don't
be Shakespear! For my sake...
We all know how
much you LOVE your doorframes, but PLEASE don't use an entire
PARAGRAPH describing a DOOR. Ok? We clear? Good.
6. Visualize it!
Nobody has EVER
just plopped their rear in a chair and wrote a popular novel. J. K.
Rowling, while planning the hit series Harry Potter, started at the
END, and worked her way backwards! Now I am NOT saying you
should write how Yoda talks, but visualizing the outcome of your
story can go a VERY long way.
7. Mood Music
Listening to
music can greatly impact your story, It sends positive
emotions through your body, so you feel better when you write. Pair
this tip with Tip #3, and you are on your way to success!
8. Final Tip.
For my final words of writing
advice, I want to tell you the most true thing I can think of; you
will have off days. Sometimes, you might have a day where you write
and ENTIRE short story, and others you might write one sentance, its'
ok!
