A romance novel ought to stir up your emotions whilst showering you with nostalgia.
Azalea Astral is a daring young model and is a daughter of the Director of Astral Fashion Company, who wants nothing but to build her own name without being dependent on her family, especially to their family’s wealth. No doubt that being a fashion model and a medical student is no joke to indulge with at the same time. Though, Azalea pays no mind to all the hardships her career and study throws in her way, for she’s got the ever loving and supporting friends and family she could ever ask for.

Everything was going smooth and on plan as per Azalea’s desire, not until she met Zee Maximus. A bewitching young man whose sole desire is to meet his first love, his childhood friend, and whose identity has been concealed from the world —a mystery to the industry— despite being the new owner of the Max Corps Company —- a company that was once owned by the best-friend of Azalea’s father. He has it all — the looks, the height, the brain, the charm, and the wealth — a literal dream guy of every girl. If only their first meeting wasn’t a horrendous one, perhaps Azalea would have already found herself beneath the man’s lair.

However, their first meeting was something that would lead the both of them to an unexpected turn of events. Azalea accused Zee of being gay, despite it being a prejudice. Which led to a misunderstanding between them. Zee on the other hand, would not let it pass as it greatly scratched his ego. Considering false accusations’ something he despises the most.

The commotion between the two parties became an erupting volcanic pressure, especially when the two once again encountered each other in the most unexpected place. However, as the time went by, Azalea found herself drawn to Zee’s charm even when all he did was annoy the hell out of her. It has been a mere hate at first, but when she discovered a side of him that she never thought of knowing, her perspective of him changed drastically. He’s just a broken man in a hardened shell of pretension. It felt like all those times, she wronged him dearly and that she wanted to be there with him — to accompany him, to protect him, to support him, and to understand him. Little did she know, he’s in motion to something.

When things started to go alight between Azalea and Zee, it seemed like a dream come true not only for them but for their family as well. But as their love story begins a chapter, they shall be tormented by a storm when people from their pasts start to interfere and things they doomed to bury to forget begin to surface again, making them feel unworthy of one another.

What will Zee do when he discovers that the girl he’s been longing for has always been with him all this time? What will Azalea do about it? Will their shallow bond be strong enough to hold one another’s hands through the challenges in their way?

         Prologue

“Mr. Maximus, I already emailed the information you’ve asked me to search for. And here are the files you asked me to gather.” Kief placed the files on the desk as per his boss’s command through a gesture of hand.

“Are these all the things I asked you for, Kief?” Zee edged forward from his seat to reach for the files and ought to scan them one by one. But before he opened the first file, Zee looked up to his secretary as he did not hear him respond. “Kief, did you not hear me? Why the sudden silence?” Zee waited for a moment for his secretary’s response, but none came. Which made his eyebrows join together. “Don’t give me that look, Kief. I have seen it from you for who knows how many times already. Fancy a penny for your thoughts?”

Kief has been Zee’s secretary since he started to take over his adopted father’s company. They both went to the same university and studied the same degree in business. Let alone be friends back when Zee was still exploring the world abroad as he wanted to have a life of his own away from those people who threw him away like trash. When Zee was appointed to be the new owner of Max Corps’ he did not want to accept it, but because his adopted father, Mike, promised him something in return, something he can’t refuse, he agreed to do it. Though, he chose to stay low-key as possible for he doesn’t want anyone to invade his personal life. Especially when he needs to keep his focus on his studies and company work. Fortunately, Kief was kind enough to accept Zee’s offer to be his secretary. Given that, he’s the only one that Zee can trust and he’s the only one who understands him very well. Which makes the flow of the work more fluid due to solid understanding and comprehension between them two. They simply make a great team together.

“My bad, I was spacing out. That’s all the things you asked for, Mr. Maximus.” Kief let out a sigh along with a wry smile. How he wished his friend, who happened to be his boss, would stop hurting other girls’ feelings. This is not the first time that Zee had asked him to run a bio check on girls as long as it reached the peak of his interest, and it always turned out to be a disaster. He would be so sweet with them for the first couple days of the relationship and would eventually dump them, breaking their hearts, cracking their heads — what wrong have they done to deserve it?

“Drop the formality. It’s giving me goosebumps. You don’t address me in such a formal manner unless there’s something bothering you. Tell me what’s on your mind.” Zee dropped the file on his hand while having his gaze fixed on Kief. He’s determined to make Kief say whatever it is that’s bothering him. In a lazy manner, Zee slumped his back at his swivel chair, crossing his arms before him. “Sit down and have a talk with me, Kief.”

Kief couldn’t do anything but shake his head in a gentle manner and sit down. “It’s nothing important. I am simply worried for this new girl you have your eyes with, at the moment. Don’t take it in a bad way, but as your friend, what you are doing to these girls is not right, Zee. You gotta stop playing with their hearts or karma will have its way on you.”

Zee didn’t say anything, rather, he reached for a photo album and stared at the little girl’s picture. A light smile curved on his lips as the thought of finally seeing the girl again – the girl he had been looking for – drives him mad. “Hey, call my dad and tell him that we’ll be going back to the country as soon as possible. Don’t matter if that means revealing my face to the world in his favour.”

         Chapter One

“Okay, that’s a wrap! Let’s call it a day here, everyone!” Announced the photographer.

I turned to the near vanity around the left corner of the studio. It has been a long day. Working as a fashion model sure is a dream come true for most people. However, it isn’t always true to me. As though, schedules can get so hectic that I need to exert much effort to balance my studies and modelling career.

“Aza, the director called. He requests your presence, right away.” Bren, my older brother, spoke before me.

“How I wish you could drop the formality, brother. He’ll definitely throw a tantrum at you if he ever heard you addressing him that way.”

It has been a year since I started working as a fashion model alongside my older brother, Bren, who happened to be the Vice President of the Astral Fashion Company — where I work.

Despite being a second year medical student, I started to work for myself and to at least support myself without being dependent on my family. My father, though being hesitant to give me permission to have me working whilst attending university, had to give in. Considering that it will be better if I learn to be supportive of myself and be independent while I am still young.

“The director is a very understanding man, you know that more than anyone else. So, if I were you, I’d waste no time talking nonsense here and meet him right away. Time’s running and no one is always free, princess.” It was sarcastic of him to say, but he’s got a point.

“Let me just rephrase what you said. No one is always free, but me. Y’all workaholic!”

The look on my brother’s face is a great satisfaction for my part, as if he just heard a very horrible sentiment, causing him to grimace with disgust. It was a hilarious reaction to see, making me grin with mockery. Which, further stimulated the unexplainable insult that his face projected.

“Coming from you?” He mocked smirking directly at me whilst pacing closer towards my ground. He paused a foot or two before me, levelling his height to mine by bending his long legs with quite of an effort. After all, he’s six feet and two tall. Too high for a five feet and four, young lady that I am.

“I’d rather not. Not today, Bren. I’ve had enough of your teasing.” I picked up my black shoulder bag over the vanity and hung it on my right shoulder before walking past my brother. “I’m going to see him now. And, I might go back to the university afterwards. I’ll see you when I see you.”

“Always halting the fun before it could even begin. You’re still a noob, my dear sister!” Bren added before I could banish the studio. Well, what else do I expect? He never lets me off with full peace of mind whenever we see each other. All it takes is a deep sigh to clear off my system and a shrug to cheer myself up from his derisions.

On my way to the Director’s office, I couldn’t help but think of the pile of schoolworks that’s waiting for me when I get back. I had to spend my whole weekend shooting with other models for the new magazine contents. I should have not shown up today, but showing up is a must. Considering that, it’s the sole thing that my brother traded for my two months off from modelling for the company. Tomorrow is Monday, and it’s the start of hell week —— finals’ coming up. Worst part, I have not the time to review all the lectures. I might as well burn my eyebrows studying all night, later.

Knocking lightly on the pair of huge brown doors, I heard the call of an adult man. Permitting me to come in. As I pace in, my eyes lingered around the massive and spacious office. In the middle situates a set of black leather sofa with couples of matching pillows. The city’s view can be seen up here from the seventh floor of the company’s building. It’s magnificent. Especially during the night time.

“Aza, I am delighted to see you!” Called out an excited voice that was owned by the man who stood up from the swivel chair, positioned before the table just right next to the glass window — which served as the sole barrier between the inside of the office and the eerie atmosphere of the outside world.

I looked at him, admiring the genuine smile on his aged yet full of youth face. Although he's already in his fifties, the mark of a beautiful youth is still visible on his face. Just like my brother Bren, he’s gigantic. Standing six feet tall. I sometimes wonder how I even became a part of this family when I am rather short to be levelled with them.

With a smile on my face, I walk towards him. When I reached the front of his desk, I ran my fingers on the rectangular glass placed over it. It has his name engraved on it. “Dean Astral, Astral Fashion Company Director” I read.

“Honestly dad, your name is a lot hotter than Bren’s.” I joked at my father. Yes, the director and the owner of the fashion modelling company I am working for is no other than my father.

Although, people might think I got my spot here rather easily, that’s far beyond the truth. I’ve been through rejections after rejections and more before I was accepted— especially because of my height. Whether you are a family or not, we believe that everyone should have fair treatment in the company. That is why my journey started roughly. True, I could’ve chosen to join another modelling agency, which I did, but in the end I still chose our family’s because my father wanted to check on me from time to time. Still, a little unfair to others but then it is what it is. Plus, it isn’t like he doesn’t care about the others, to begin with. In fact, they get more attention than I do, most of the time.

“How’s your day, my dear?” Dad asked as he stepped closer to give me a hug to which I welcomed warmly.

“If I tell you that it wasn’t tiring, I’d be lying. But then, it is how it goes.” I placed my bag on the sofa before sitting down. My legs were literally craving for a good rest. Which was made more obvious to my father when I let out a sigh of great relief as soon as I got to sit down and lay my legs up on the neighbouring couch. “Excuse the demeanour, dad. Been craving for a snooze. Anyway, what is it that you called me for? I’d like to hit the road and go back to the university to attend my review session with my friends.”

While feeling the comfort of the soft cushion of the couch, I raised my gaze up to my father who happened to have lost his colour by the surpassing worried look he’s giving me. I knew it, he’s worried about me again.

With a light smile on my lips, I watched my father sit opposite me and anticipated what his next words would be.

“Alright, I’ll get down to business. I permit you to take two months off. However, you have to promise me that you will treat yourself to a good rest and catch up with things you missed. Even, do things in advance. Go, treat yourself out. Take a break after you’re done with your finals. Ask your friends to go for a trip. Take good care of yourself, my dear daughter. Your health comes first no matter what. Do you understand?”

I almost lost control of myself and nearly laughed at my father. Although, I couldn’t because his face shows he’s serious about this matter. Even his voice’s irrevocable proof.

“If business is always like this, I would’ve already succeeded more than you did a long time ago, dad.” I joked at him. It was actually a comfort in disguise. Though, I can tell that he didn’t like the sarcasm I threw by the way his eyebrows joined together and how his eyes glared fiercely at me. “Right, I get it dad. I promise, okay? Now please don’t worry about me. I can handle things on my own.”

“I know that well enough, Aza. All I ask is that you take care of yourself. Everything that you are working hard right now will be of nothing if you get sick and can no longer function.”

It was deep. With a sigh, I offered my dad a hug. “I understand, dad. Thank you for always being so supportive and caring. You’re the best.” I finished my words with a peck on my father’s cheek. “As much as I love to stay and chat with you, I cannot. I really have to hurry back to the university, dad.”

I checked my wrist watch and it’s already three in the afternoon. I do not have much time left to review for tomorrow’s exam.

“Alright, suit yourself. Don’t forget to come home, Aza. You’re staying at your dorm rather more frequently than your own home, even when it’s just a ride away.” Dad complained.

“As it should be, dad. Anyway, I always come home every weekend. I’ll see you this Saturday and I’ll be sure to pass all my exams. Will that be good, dad? If it is, then I’m taking my leave now.”

I picked up my shoulder bag and hung it on my right shoulder, giving my father another peck on his cheek before turning to leave his office.

“Aza.” Dad, called out. “Let Mike take you back to the university.”

I do not want to make my stay any longer so I just moved my head for a nod. Giving my father a tight hug before finally leaving his office.

Me and dad may barely see each other, but that doesn’t hinder our good relationship. He has his ways to always remind me that he’s always there, ready to support me at all times. Of course, that goes the same with my brother. They just love me so much that I could not ask for anything more, but be grateful to have them in my life.

Uncle Mike dropped me off in front of the university gate, as I told him so. He has been my father’s secretary for almost five years now. What can I say? They are best of friends after all. Which makes him my second father. He’s the kindest, second to my dad I meant, man I ever knew. Although, there’s just one thing that I don’t get. He’s as loaded as my family, but chose to become my father’s secretary ever since he let his son take care of his business. Sometimes, my curiosity comes to the surface and can’t help but wonder who’s this son he’s referring to. For what I’ve known, he doesn’t have a son because his wife had her eggs frozen due to some health concerns.

Striding the library, I wander my eyes around to look for the table that my friends occupied. It didn’t take me much time to find them. Since, Tiffany’s already waving her hands to me, calling for my attention. To which, I responded with long steps towards them. “Hey, thanks for waiting. I’m sorry I’m late. We finished rather late, let alone talked to my dad.” I explained to them.

“It’s alright, Aza. How’s it? I’m sure it went well, right?” Xymph queried.

“You bet, girl.” I responded to her with a wink. “Right, what is wrong with him?” I asked. Pointing at Wave who looks like he just cried a bucket of tears. It isn’t the first time I saw him like this and I know just what is the reason for his situation right now.

“What else? He’s got dumped by his girlfriend.” Yllon answered with a smug grin on his face. He sure enjoys the sight of Wave being dumped by girls when he, himself, barely has the guts to ask a girl out.

“Just as I thought.” I placed my hand at Wave’s back, caressing it gently to offer him consolation. “Which girlfriend is it now that dumped you, playboy?” I teased.

“The irony!” Tiffany snapped. “He’s the only playboy I know who cries over a girl.”

“I second the motion.” Xymph agreed.

These people really know nothing but make fun of our poor friend, Wave. Despite comforting Wave, we’re likewise laughing at him. It’s just hilarious how easy it is for him to get a girl but too hard for him to make one stay.

         Chapter Two

Reckoning that the library is not a place where we can gossip in a silent manner, we decided to change places and go to a cafe. Where, we can crash for hours without minding getting kicked out due to our lack of voice control.

“Are we supposed to do this right now? I mean we’re about to take our final exams tomorrow. I have not reviewed anything, yet.” I complained to my friends. Somehow, I can tell that they’re way too chill. Not to mention that, they still have time to gossip around when I know in all factuality that they likewise reviewed none. But then, I’ve been getting this feeling like I am forgetting something. I just can’t pinpoint exactly what it is.

Upon hearing my complaint, the exchange of gazes of Xmph and Tiffany, the baffled look on Yllon’s face, and the blank look that Wave threw at me were indications that I am in fact missing or forgetting something.

“What?” I snapped at them. “We live in a society where voices are necessary for making sound speeches. I’d highly appreciate it if one of you can do it, like right now.”

I thought my sarcasm would get the best of them, but I am starting to think that it is no longer working. They might have been used to it. Instead of a sound response, I received nothing but my friends’ perpetual yet gentle shaking of their heads. As if, they do not believe what they are witnessing at the moment.

Well, if sarcasm would not work this time, then I surmise a little drama will. “Fine, I give up. I’m going back to my dorm to study. Surely, all of you are capable of consoling Wave.” If that still won’t work, I’ll just storm off. But, from what I see it is working. As though, Tiffany halted me from standing up by grasping for my arm as if she’s begging me to stay.

“Tomorrow’s free day.” Yllon announced.

“So that was it. That’s the thing I am forgetting about. No wonder, I haven’t the slightest will to review. But if so, then why are you guys back at the university when you could have done it tomorrow?”

I heard Yllon let out a deep sigh of disappointment along with the instant dropping of my girls’ shoulders. While, Wave remained unbothered. He prolly is lost in his thoughts already. I just can’t see how much desperation he has towards his girlfriend. When, all she ever did is to hurt his feelings as well as his pockets. What a shame.

“You never really check the group chat, do you?” Tiffany snapped. I looked at her with an innocent look and slightly shook my head. “Makes sense.” She added.

“It’s all Wave’s fault.” Xymph interjected. “If it wasn’t because of him, I am already slurping ice cream and lying on my bed like a dead corpse.”

“How is it my fault, huh? It’s not like I forced y’all to come and join me in my breakdown.” Wave’s voice almost cracked. Which I found hilarious. Like, he could literally be so dramatic over small things.

“Admit it or not. That’s exactly what you want. You just can’t live alone without us. I bet, if we leave you now you’ll be crying your guts out.” Yllon mocked. Of all people I know, he’s got nothing but mockery on his system.

As soon as Yllon was finished with his words, Wave shot him a death stare. “Then go, why do you even care about me?”

“Because I simply do, dummy!” Irritation is clear on Yllon’s voice and it sure was loud.

After he said that, a feeling of hoity-toity came alive in me. “Right, why do you even care this much about him, ice king? Are you his boyfriend or something?” I chaffed. Which brought laughter to us but Yllon. Well, at least that made Wave laugh. He’s too shallow.

The look on Yllon’s face, however, can’t be drawn. “Seriously, you’re watching too much gay stuff, Aza. And, drop the ice king will you? I stopped being one a long time ago.”

“True that, girl. Though, I am starting to think that our dearest Aza here took over of your coldness, Yllon. If it weren’t for her fantasies she would not dare say a word or two. Right, did you watch one earlier, did you not?” Xymph seconded, motioning to me.

“If you’re joking in that state, please learn to make one first.” I said. It’s not like they are wrong about it, though embarrassment simply overcomes me whenever they mention it in public. “Anyway, I think Wave is okay now. Look at him.” I pointed at Wave. “He’s already smiling. But then, I doubt we’re going to touch any of our reviewers today. Prolly, have it done tomorrow.” Yes, that's just how things work for us. Nothing new, only that cramming motivates us.

Wave was about to say something but was halted by Tiffany, slamming her hand on the table. Which startled not only him but all of us.

“Dude, what’s the scene for?” Xymph shot. “That scared the hell out me.”

“I’m sorry about that. Hey, Aza ain’t this your uncle Mike’s company?” Tiffany asked, causing me to frown and move beside her to see what she’s referring to. What I saw was a news headline stating that Max Corps finally revealed their new owner. Could it be uncle Mike’s son?

“That’s indeed uncle Mike’s company. So, what does the new owner look like?” I asked out of malice.

“About that, I think you guys should check it for yourself. The internet is not working well right now.” Tiffany grinned, guilty upon ending her words.

“Say what?” Xymph and I jinxed. I was honestly looking forward to know how this so called son of uncle Mike look like. And, if he’s really that capable to deserve the company.

“Right, don’t you know who the new owner of the Max Corps, Aza? The new owner remained a mystery for almost half a decade now.” Wave asked. I am truly glad that he’s starting to be himself, again —— lacking common sense.

“I wouldn’t ask if I already know. Do you not think so?” I snapped at him.

Tiffany just shrugged us off. “That’s more like it. Anyway, just check it out to satisfy your curiosity, later.”

I just frowned in response. What else can we do, but check it for ourselves then. Curiosity can kill a cat and that’s for sure.

When my friends decided to call it a day, I separated ways from them saying I will hit the road and go home instead. Dad called me to join him and brother for dinner. I didn’t resist anymore, given that I am free tomorrow. It’s also a good thing that I’ll be staying at home, for I plan to study there. At least, I am sure there will be no distraction since dad and Bren are busy with their own stuff as well.

“Here’s your change, miss.” The cashier announced, handing me my change. I had to drop by the nearest convenience store to buy some snacks. One reason why I don’t stay at home — dad doesn’t keep snacks. If he does, Bren would have it all for himself.

“Thank you.” I took my change and started my way out of the store. It’s almost seven in the evening and I have to hurry back home. I do not want to be late or their necks will be stretched like giraffes’ waiting for me.

Taking my steps longer and quicker than usual, I stride the parking lot, way to where I parked my car. Honestly, I can just take my time and be in no hurry, but then I am too tired to be slugging at the moment. No time to waste. The earlier I get home, the earlier I can rest.

“What on earth?” I cussed out, when out of nowhere, someone appeared before me and bumped into me. Causing me to lose my balance and even drop the bag of snacks I am holding. Whereas, my lower body meets and greets the ground. My butt hurts like hell. What kind of a person can be as hard and as sturdy as a metal wall? Damn it.

“Blind girl.” A deep whole voice of a man echoed in my ears. It was too husky that it sent shivers down to every inch of me. His voice is heavenly, but his arrogance is to be burned in hell for eternity.

“You dare call me blind, when you’re the one who appeared out of nowhere? You even bumped into me! Now, who’s blind?” I nagged, while picking up the bag of snacks I dropped. Thereafter, pulling myself together to stand on my ground and find my right balance. It feels like my head is spinning due to the harsh impact I acquired. “Why have you gone quiet, huh? Where did that arrogance of yours go?” When I was finally able to fix myself, I dared to look him in the eyes, for he didn’t reply to any of what I said. Only to regret it in an instant.

I am a foot away from a giant. My neck hurts from looking up at him. But once our eyes met, an awkward atmosphere began to envelop us. Somehow, the spite I felt towards him was replaced with genuine admiration. Who wouldn’t? His eyebrows — dark and daringly authoritative in a way. His eyes are beaming void yet with a touch of innocence under the ceiling light of the parking lot. Not to mention his plum divided lips situated perfectly under his magnificently carved nose. Let alone, his firm jawline that boasts and completes his angelic look. He’s like a living statue with his fair skin.

I didn’t realise that my eyes were already exploring him. However, I just couldn’t help it. He’s too tempting to resist. His features are marvellous. The broadness of his shoulders made it almost impossible to vision me in front of him if you view it from the back. Ergo, the muscles he’s hid underneath his white sleeve are undeniable, as though they bulge like the fabric of his cloth is not enough to conceal them. I was lost in my fantasy. He’s a living standard. At least in physical appearance.

“Hey, are you a narcissist or something?” I heard him saying. There’s a hint of irritation in his voice, but it wasn’t enough to bring me back to reality. I do not know what is wrong with me. I felt like slapping myself but couldn’t. It’s like I’m under the influence of a hypnotic spell.

Though, a loud snap brought me back to reality. It was him snapping his fingers before my eyes. Embarrassment got the best of me. My cheeks burned and I could tell that I am already turning red like a ripe tomato. How I wish I could run away from this disconcerting scene. That, if I wasn’t allured by his long and slender fingertips along with the veins of his hands, bulging and boasting underneath his skin like they’re craving to be traced. What a temptation!

“Hun, what’s taking you so long?” A voice spoke from behind. I tuned to see who owned the voice and I do not know what to feel. The person in front of me caused me nothing but curiosity. I am sure I heard a girl’s voice, but what stood before me was a man. “Who is she?” He asked, glaring at me before walking past me. To which, I responded with the following gaze. Only to witness his affectionate way of linking his arm to the other man’s — who bumped into me — arm.

“Hun, let’s go or you’ll be late.” The man with a girl’s voice invited the arrogant man, as they started their way away from me.

I am left dumbfounded. They’re not real men! He’s not straight. He’s gay!

Chapter Three

“Azalea Astral, you’re home!” My dad greeted me with a proud smile drawn on his face. I wonder what had gotten into him. He opened his arms to welcome me into a warm hug. Which, I willingly accepted with a bright smile.

“What’s up with you, dad? No need to shout my name out loud. That proud look on your face is creepy enough.” I commented.

Last time that he had this kind of look and energy on him, he had set me to meet someone close to him. A guy about my age. Only to disappoint himself when that guy — he’s bragging about — did not show up for he’s having a racing championship. Reason that he needed to cancel the meeting with us, like nothing. If only he knew how much time we wasted waiting for him to show up. The nerve of that guy! I’d be sure to give him a piece of my mind when I finally meet him. Though, I am not really looking forward to meeting him. It’d be better if we never cross paths.

Dad started his way inside the dining area, first. Having me pacing behind him. “Bren, your little sister is here.” He announced to my older brother who happened to be signing a pile of papers or documents placed over the dining table. Seriously, this is one thing I dislike about him. Can’t he just do his thing in his office and leave the dining area to be a normal dining area? He really took after our workaholic father.

“Hey Aza, howdy? Go take a shower first and come down afterwards. Anyway, we’re still waiting for Uncle Mike to join us. Would be perfect timing for me to have these documents signed.” He said. His greeting was casual, but his after words definitely sounded like dad’s.

Still, I didn’t bother to complain when my dad nodded to me, signalling to follow what my brother had said. “Fine, I’ll be down in a few minutes then.” I said before climbing the stairs way up to my room.

After a quick shower, I put on my pyjamas and white oversized Tee. It’s no formal dinner, to begin with. Thus, I surmise it would be fine to be in home clothes. It’s much more comfortable than some fancy outfits.

While walking down the stairs, I unlocked my phone to check some messages from my friends. As usual, our group chat is alive even without my participation. After all, chatting for hours’ not my forte. I am a busy person. More like I hate spending my time on unimportant matters. Am not saying that communicating with my friends is not significant, it’s just that they’re talking nonsense —— random memes on the internet. I’d rather not.

“Watch your steps and you might just break an ankle looking down on your phone, whilst pacing down the staircase, sweetheart.” Dad warned, when he caught sight of me. With that, I locked my phone and completely descended the stairs. It’d be a disaster if I truly broke an ankle. I would despise being disabled because of my own stupidity.

“Is uncle Mike already here?” I asked.

“He’s in the bathroom. He will be out any moment now.” Dad replied.

“Take your seat, Aza. Dinner is ready.” Bren invited. Finally, the pile of documents is gone. But, there’s just one thing that can’t escape my eyes. They’re still wearing their business suits. I thought it would just be a normal family dinner. Though, if it is, they would have already been wearing home clothes.

My curiosity won’t just let it slip away, and so I asked why. “Hey dad, Bren, why are you two still in your business suits? I’ve been going upstairs for almost half an hour. I presumed you’d be here in your pyjamas.”

“About that, we’re expecting someone else to join us for dinner and it’s just proper to be in appropriate attire when meeting a business partner, right?” Dad explained.

I wonder who this person he is referring to. I should have worn something better than my pyjamas and Tee. Would it be rude if I present myself this way in front of our visitor? Forget it, I live here and I can do whatever I want. Most importantly, I can wear whatever I want.

“Surely, your visitor would not mind my nowhere formal wear. I reckon that it’ll be quite a hassle to go and change for something more presentable.” It was more of a complaint than a regular statement. Thankfully, my dad and brother didn’t say anything to oppose but simply shook their heads whilst smiling at me.

“You don’t have to, my dear. With or without fancy attire, you are already beaming with beauty.” A voice spoke from behind. I turned to see who it was, despite already knowing who owns it.

“Uncle Mike, always the flatterer, you surely are!” I giggled at the sight of him grinning at me. He may not be my blooded uncle, but then our bond is stronger than a real blooded one. He simply has this pleasing aura that could ease a heavy atmosphere enveloping you. “I’m glad to see you and to have dinner with you, today.”

He walked towards me and placed a hand over my head, gently patting it. “So am I, Aza. Were you able to review with your friends earlier?” Uncle Mike withdrew his hand from over my head. Then, turned to his seat as soon as Dad gestured to him to sit down.

“Yeah, we were able to review a few.” That was a lie. “However, I plan to review the rest tomorrow. Since, it's a free day. So, I’ll be staying home for a whole day.” Now, that was true. For the record, nothing feels better than being at home, lying around, doing my own thing with as much freedom, and enjoying the day without unnecessary distractions.

While waiting for their guest to arrive, I reached for a pitcher of water and poured some to fill my glass a quarter. I’ll just drink water for now, just to calm down my grumbling stomach. I am famished, but then I do not want to be inconsiderate and act all inappropriate and eat first. After all, it would not matter whether I finish eating first or not. Dad informed me that he’d want me to meet his business partner. What else can I do, but wait.

I drink from my glass, eyeing my brother who understands what I am doing. Given that, he’s grinning at me while mouthing ‘bear with it, princess’. I just rolled my eyes in response to his mockery. I do not want to deal with his nonsense. Not now that I am starving to death. My system’s not functioning well and so my mind’s slow.

Just as when I was about to gulp a mouthful of water, a deep panting voice echoed in my ears. “I’m sorry. I’m late, had to take care of something. So, I had to rush over here.” It says. I know that voice. I can’t be mistaken. I raised my gaze to the owner of the voice to confirm my suspicion. When I got a sight of who spoke, my suspicion was cleared — confirmed — causing me to accidentally puke a mouthful of water at my brother’s face. “You! What are you doing here?”

“Aza! What on earth do you think you are doing?” My brother’s disgusted voice called. He’s wiping the droplets of water off his face with his bare hands, glaring at me with irritation. Poor him, his handsome look was basically ruined as though the suit he is wearing is already wet. Didn’t realize, I had that much water stored inside my mouth. I kinda feel sorry for him.

“Apologies, Bren. I didn’t mean to. It’s just that I was taken aback by the sight of that guy.” I pointed at the guy who bumped into me earlier in the parking lot. Just, what on earth is he doing in my house? What a daring rainbow.

“Do you know my son, Aza?” Uncle Mike asked. With the look on his face, I could tell that he was baffled by the way I reacted upon the guy’s entrance. But, did I hear it right? He is his son? No way!

“He is your son? How is it possible? You never had a son, uncle. Don’t tell me he’s the new owner of your company? Oh, please you got to be kidding me. If only you knew what kind of man he really is. If he really is a man.” Dear God, I really went overboard with that one. The hall is now filled with silence with flustered looks of my family before me. This mouth of mine will be the death of me.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be mindless of my words.” I apologised out of guilt.

“Might I take a seat?” Asked the guy. What a pretentious one — two faced bugger. Does he dare act all polite in front of my family? When, we both know how much arrogance he has in him.

When he finally settled down, no one dared say a word or two. Just awkward silence filling the air around us. Not until my brother courageously asked me. “So, you two already know each other?”

“No.” I immediately responded.

“From what I just witnessed and heard, that’s not the case at all.” My dad contradicted. Yeah right, thanks dad you just proved me a liar in front of a bastard. How I wish I could break his neck right now. He’s literally smiling upon hearing my father’s words. I shot him a death stare to which he returned with a raised eyebrow. The nerve of this guy!

I was about to lose my cool, but thankfully before I could, Uncle Mike spoke. “Alright. Everyone, this is my son, Zee. Zee, this is the Astral family.” He introduced.

My brother and father gladly shook Zee’s hand, while I rebuffed it at all cost. Businessmen sure are scary people. They could act like they just met each other for the first time as if it’s nothing. Though, no matter how much I fantasised about Zee's features, I could no longer care less.

“Aza, he is the new owner of Mike’s company. And also my current business partner.” My father informed me. “Aren’t you going to greet him?” Dad raised his eyebrows at me, anticipating my response. He’s really expecting me to greet the arrogant Zee. Well, I am not.

“I am afraid not, father.” I turned to face Uncle Mike to satisfy my queries. “How is he your son when you are pure pleasant and when he is pure arrogance, uncle?” There was a glimpse of shock on his face for a split second before he could finally digest my words.

“Aza, mind your language will you?” Bren warned. To which I replied with nothing but a sluggish shrug.

“That’s fine, Bren. Well, he isn’t my biological son, but my older sister’s. I took care of him when she passed away. Only that, he grew up abroad. That is why no one knew him till now. But, since he had chosen to stay here, I let him take care of the company. Given that, he’s got the skills, knowledge, and experience on it. What can I say? He’s made his proposed business project a big success for his university while he’s still in his senior year.”

Uncle Mike sure is proud of his adopted son. His eyes are shining with pure pride while he’s talking about Zee. Let alone, the smile that’s drawn by his lips never left his face. Undeniably, Zee is talented enough and capable enough to inherit Uncle Mike’s company for a young age. That, if all that Uncle Mike said were true. He could be bluffing, but given his genuine character, there’s very little chance that he is in fact bluffing.

“Dad, you’re exaggerating.” Those were Zee’s first sentiments after being silent for a while now. Seriously, how long does he plan to pretend like he’s a good son?

I couldn’t help but stare at him with disgust. He might have been able to fool everyone else, but there’s no way he can fool me. I am going to ruin his perfect image with his nasty secret.

“Do you think he is really this good? Are you sure he is not hiding anything from you, Uncle Mike?” I smirk upon seeing Zee’s reaction. He’s totally lost it. On the other hand, Uncle Mike is as baffled as my Dad who is looking at me with arched eyebrows. Whilst, Bren threw me a death glare with a disbelieving expression.

“Aza, stop being a brat. What did Zee do to you for you to act this way? You are not being a brat for nothing. I am sure of that.” The frustration is clear in my older brother’s voice. I can’t blame him, though he isn’t wrong at all. I sure am not being a brat for nothing.

“Oh, you have no idea what he did, brother. He’s the most arrogant person I have ever met in my entire life.” My voice is already starting to go higher in pitch. The annoyance I felt when he acted all bugger in front of me earlier is coming back to the surface. “And for the record, he is not all manly.”

The shock on their faces is surreal. My dad and his best friend almost lost their colours. Even Zee turned to me, giving me an incredulous look. He’s just making it more obvious that no one really knows his true colour. I wonder what his father will do if he learns the truth about his very good son.

“Aza!” Bren called out. His voice now loud — almost a shout. Really, he acts more like a father than dad does. Just look at it, dad remained calm and collected and quiet all along. While, Bren did nothing but use his brotherly power against me — to steady me aside. Unfortunately, I am as stubborn as I could get. “How could you say such a thing about Zee? Have you gone mad?”

“Oh come on! Quit defending him, for Pete’s sake he is gay!”

Chapter Four

A loud—deep echoing laughter of a man filled the entire dining hall. Making the atmosphere somewhat baffling. Which gave me chills — awakening the hairs in my skin into a rise.

“What seems to be so hilarious, huh?” My words were like a bubble that disappeared into thin air. No one paid attention to my buggering. Everyone’s attention is directed to Zee, who continued to laugh as if he just heard the joke of the century. He’s gay and that’s the truth. At least, that’s what I believe. “Stop laughing, moron. Do you think by laughing the truth off would bend the fact that you are gay?”

Mayhap, my brother had used up the last piece of his patience as he reached for my hand under the table and enclosed his fingers around my wrist rather tightly. It hurts. “What is wrong with you? I see no reason for you to dislike Zee. Aza, calm down and see sense to what you are doing right now. Trust me, you are not making any sense at all.” He preached.

Neither do I have a particular reason to dislike Zee this much, more like hate him this much. Solely, his guts hit every nerve in me. True, he’s not that bad in terms of physical appearance. In fact, he’s close to being perfect. Especially when he laughs — his striking eyes squint as his lips parts into two welcoming the alluring sight of his white teeth that possesses an excessive pride. The joyous look that his face projects is just too captivating for anyone to resist looking at. Wouldn’t be surprised if he hooked up lasses with that look of him, tricking them, making them believe that he is indeed into women.

“Pardon me, gentlemen.” Zee started. “Goodness lass, what made you think I am into men?” He added, his body now facing towards my direction, his attention to me, and his eyes scanning me with authority as his lips tauntingly curved slightly upwards with amusement.

“It would be perfect if you two could talk this matter out before it gets any worse. Perhaps, it was merely a misunderstanding. Right, Aza, Zee?” Father spoke.

I looked at Father with a ridiculous look. How could he fathom that this is merely a misunderstanding? “Dad, Uncle, Brother, I saw him with another guy earlier and they were truly sly with each other.” I am holding on to the tiny patience left in me, clenching my fists, biting my tongue, trying to figure out how they can not see how huge of an impact it would be for our business’ profile if this earns any publicity? It’s frustrating.

“Zee?” Uncle Mike’s voice called out with the quiet of an authority. I look at him and he is glaring at his son. I knew it, he is not aware of this matter. Though, I feel a bit distressed by what I just did. Uncle Mike looks broken and Zee looks petrified by how his father is looking at him. “What’s this all about? Would you care to explain?”

Before speaking, Zee took a deep breath whilst the smile on his face vanished just like that. “I was not with another man, Dad.” He’s emphasising every word he uttered in between gritted teeth. I didn’t expect them to react this way. Is Uncle Mike homophobic? “In fact, I was with Gigi. Gigi’s as sly as a woman greedy for attention.” So, that’s his name —— Gigi. I must have wronged him. Though, I am not sure if it’s just me or Zee was emphasising his last words whilst looking at me with fierce and squinted eyes. He better not be calling me that for I sure am not any greedy for attention. Especially for his attention. “And, what is it if I’m homosexual? Would that change anything I’ve earned and come so far? Unless, you fancy being with me, Aza.”

His words reached me like ice cold water, awakening every sleeping part of me. Without any hesitation, I slammed my hands on the dining table, startling everyone. “That’s it, I’m out of here.” I stood my ground in a rash manner, ready to leave. “I was actually considering apologising to you as I wronged you, Zee. But, on second thought, I’d rather not. You do not deserve it, bugger!” I couldn’t care what my father and brother think of me at this moment. All I care is getting out of here otherwise I would not be able to contain myself and slap Zee in front of them. “Oh, let me just clear one thing here. I would never dream of being your woman. Never.” With that, I stormed off the dining area, climbing the stairs up to my room, fists clenched beside me, teeth gritted, wanting to shout my irritation out loud.

“Aza, here!” Tiffany called out as I entered the exam room. “Girl, you look horrible. Were you able to get any rest at all?”

“I barely even get any sleep so don’t bother asking.” I snapped at her, taking my seat beside her.

“And how’s that possible when you stayed at your home? Thought home was your best resolve for rest other than the dorm, as you are always sick of seeing our faces.” Xymph — who happened to be sitting at the other side of Tiffany — retorted.

“Oh please, it’s too early for a discussion my dear gossip people. Give me a break will you?” My temper’s not very good as it keeps on getting hotter and hotter, since the moment I met that stupid and annoying Zee.

As I was taking out my things, preparing for the exam, someone sat down on the empty seat next to me. “Someone’s having a bad morning, I see.” Yllon voiced out.

“Who’s having a bad morning? Is it any worse than taking the exam with a broken heart but without any review?” Wave added.

I am so done with these people—so early in the morning. I badly want to kick their asses, right now. “Another word from any of you…” I pointed at my friends one by one, giving them a warning glare. “… and I swear you guys will be walking on thin ice.”

The night I walked out of the dining hall, has been a terrible night for me. Neither my brother nor my dad bothered me about what happened, but I know that they’re just giving me considerations as I am dealing with my exams at the moment, and they likewise have their hands full at work. Though, I am certain that after this, they will have me spilling about why I acted that way the other night. Still, that’s none of my concern. My exams come first before nonsense.

Chapter Five

Stretching my arms up in the air, I let myself enjoy the sensual satisfaction that lingers in my system at the moment. Finally, I survived another tremendous examination. Though, I am certain I slayed it. “What a day it has been. Might actually need a therapeutic rest sooner than expected.” Maybe, a break of a month or two is not a bad idea, at all. I shall ask Bren to find me a good spot to stay on for a vacation.

“Hey Aza, how was the exam? It was literally draining for me. Like, where did the questions even come from? I have not encountered it while reviewing.” Xymph shrewd before me, packing her things up. Frustration was evident in her voice. I can’t blame her. The exams were actually harder than the rest that we had before. Fortunately, it was close to a piece of cake for me, as I have scanned my notes during our past discussions with our teachers. It certainly saved me, today.

I offered Xymph a comforting smile as she anticipated my response. “It wasn’t that hard for me, at all. I had my lecture notes that I scanned last night. It helped a lot. Didn’t you scan it?” Looking at Xymph’s dry reaction, I need not wait for her answer. “No, you didn’t. Forget where you placed it, again?” Happens all the time. Among us, Xymph’s most likely to misplace her stuff and even totally forget about it. “It can’t be helped. It already happened, but I’m sure you passed. You got it, girl.” I gave her a reassuring smile before patting her lightly by the shoulder.

“You two, how long do you plan to stay here?” Yllon inquired from a distance.

I just noticed that everyone else has already banished the examination room, but us five. Without any second thought, I grabbed my pen by my desk, stuffed it inside my bag’s minipocket before hanging my bag on my shoulder. “Just a moment, we’re coming!” I announced, whilst pacing after Xymph who’s now directing towards our friends.

“Should we grab dinner together tonight? Let’s celebrate!” Tiffany invited in a lively manner as soon as we closed the distance between us. I wonder what had gotten her so excited this time that she’s a lot livelier than last-year’s finals.

“Do tell, where do you ought to go this vacation? That’s the only thing that can divert your attention from getting depressed about the exams.” Xymph raised her brows at Tiffany in between query.
“Am so glad you asked, Xymph. I haven’t found the will to get over the horror of the exam and yet Tiffany here’s already moved on. How I wish it’s that easy.” Wave’s face a lot worse than the last day. Colors definitely are not his friend right now. He looks like a walking corpse. Perhaps, he spent his night studying only to find out none of the things he studied came out on the exams. Well, what’s new? Happens every time, anyway.

“Come on people, chill out abit willl you? Tiffany only invited us for a dinner not a vacation.” Yllon’s words struck us as a realization. He’s right. “Or, do y’all really fancy a vacation? I heard that they’re going to extend our semestra break for two months as per summer vacation.”

“Really? When did you hear that, and from whom?” Xymph inquired with eyes wide open as if she just heard some very good news.

“From the Dean and the staff earlier today when I had to assist one of the proctors with the test papers. We just so happen to walk alongside the Dean and the staff. Said, they’ll be posting the memorandum on the page this evening.” Yllon’s words were like producers of dopamine that made us grin like crazy.

“Yes, let’s go!” Papers were flying up in the air as Xymph threw her reviewers in extreme joy. I would have done the same if I only had piles of papers on my hand, but that wasn’t the case.

“I was actually planning to go on a vacation as dad and Bren already approved me to have a two months off from work, for me to have a good rest before the next semester start. So, are we going to push this on?” I am definitely in the cloudline, I could dive from the sky. “Let me just ask Bren to find us a good spot and place to stay.”

“No need for that. My Dad just recently opened a resort down the countryside. Let’s go there. And, before any of you disagree, let me trade you with bewitching views of big-time tourists hanging out there. My Dad mentioned that one of his biggest investors will be visiting there this week. Bunos, he’s a real deal. Wouldn’t miss the chance to have a glance.” Wave traded, ending his sentiments with a wink. The proud smile on his face is the living evidence of how exaggerated his feelings for this vacation that we are planning right now, out of the blue.

Without further debate, we agreed to stay at Wave’s family resort for a change of scenery. Given that, it’s by the countryside. Meaning, there will be views other than just seas let alone fresher air than of the city’s. As soon as we agreed on it, Wave called his Dad to tell him about our plan which was a great idea as well for his dad. We couldn’t take a moment to calm down as we disregarded the plan of grabbing dinner together and rather called it a day, for us to prepare and pack our things in the earliest of time. We wish to go the day after tomorrow, and that would be irrevocable as it is already final.

Instead of going to my dorm, I went back home hoping to see Dad and Bren there. Let alone, grab my stuff to suffice for our stay. Although, it wouldn’t be necessary as everything will be provided by the resort’s accommodation, I still prefer to have my personal stuff close by me.

When I got home, as expected Dad’s still not home. Though, I came across my brother by the living area, watching a movie. He seems so relaxed. How I miss this sight of my brother hanging out at home, without a pile of paper-works. Slowly, I approached him — making sure he didn't notice me — and hugged him from the back. “Hi Bren, I’m home. How are you doing?” Whilst keeping him in my embrace, I kissed my brother on the cheek. “It’s good to see you hanging out here. At least this house doesn’t feel so empty when I go back home unannounced.”

Normally, my Dad would be flying from one place to another, attending business meetings. On the other hand, Bren would spend his time at his home with his fiance. Though, he frequents our family house these days as Becha, his fiance, flew to New York to attend a meeting in his stead. What a lazy bummer, letting his girl do all the talking whilst he sits his ass uptight in his swivel chair, signing papers.

“Aza, you’re here?” I heard my brother calling out from the nearby kitchen. Which sent shivers down to my spine, giving me goosebumps. Suddenly, I felt my body lose its warmth as my hands turned cold and my face turned pale. I couldn’t move an inch from the confusion and unexplainable terror I am feeling. If my brother’s in the kitchen, who’s this guy I am hugging?

Whilst frozen in my position, the guy adjusted his body from my embrace by loosening my arms around him — his touch warm and gentle, and slowly turned his head to look up at me. When the light from the chandelier in the living area lit his face as per my view, my body dropped on the floor. Like, my knees were ultimately weak to hold my weight. My eyes were wide as of an owl, while my jaw dropped open in shock. ‘How is it possible?’s all that rings in my head.

“Hi, Azalea.” He spoke in a taunting manner in between grins. Hearing his chivalrous voice and enthralling smile were enough reasons to have me paralyzed.
