Greg and Dennis find a different kind of treasure. 300 words

What Would Today's Pirates Do?

“Hey Greg, if we were pirates today, where would we hide our money?”

“I think there are better places than spending hours digging to bury it, Dennis!”

“Like where?”

“A small cave. We could pile rocks in the opening so you couldn’t tell it was a cave.”

“Yeah, and we could mark it with some kinda sign that only we would know.”

“It wouldn’t be there long anyway; we’d have to finance the next treasure hunting voyage somehow. We don’t want to leave it as long as some of the olden-day pirates did. Sometimes they left it so long, they forgot where it was!”

“Really, does that mean we might find real pirates’ gold if we look hard enough in the right places?”

“I guess so, but it’s a long way to the ocean from here,” Greg said as he checked out the horizon of the prairies they stood in.

“Look what I found!” Dennis crowed as he bent down in tall grass.

“It’s an arrowhead! Greg said as he examined it.

“I guess it’s another kind of booty, right?”

Greg wasn’t listening, he was examining the find with a magnifying glass.

“I changed my mind; I don’t think this is any old arrowhead. It actually looks like a dinosaur tooth!”

“Wow!! How we gonna find out what kind?” Dennis wondered happily.

“We can send a picture to the Drumheller Museum with a SASE, and they can tell us.”

“Let’s mark the spot with an Inukshuk wearing feathers in case they want to come and excavate for more evidence,” Greg decided.

When the marker was done, the two boys headed home with their “treasure” thinking of supper and the secrets they wanted to keep from the adults in their families, at least for a while.
