This is the first story in a Texas series about the revolution from Mexico.

The battle of Gonzalez was the first battle in the Texian war of independence. The battle took place because the Mexicans requested that a cannon be given to them because they thought it unwise as many states were rebelling (Yucatan, for example) due to the centralized government under Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The Texans, who were called Texians at the time, had the cannon for many reasons, mostly defense from the Native Americans. The Texians flew a flag that said "Come and take it!" Casualties were minimal and acceptable given it was 100 v. 150. The Mexicans lost one man with two inured. The only Texian casualty was a bloody nose due to being thrown off a horse. These are the first casualties in the war, other than some Mexicans dying from disease and starvation on the long journey. The whereabouts of the original cannon are unknown, but a replica is on display in Austin.
