Key Facts: Rachel is the main POV character of the Reduction Virus setting. She is a young woman still finding her place in the world, whose future for now remains unset.

A member of the Role family, Rachel grew up in a mixed-size family with a mother and two sisters who towered over her as Unaffected, a Tiny father and brother like herself, and even a Micro big brother whom she towered over in turn. She attended a Tiny-only elementary and middle school, but a mixed-sized high school and university. These varied experiences have prepared her well for living in the modern world of the UTC.

Rachel is employed at Safe Standards Compliance as a risk and compliance analyst and auditor, working alongside Unaffected and Tiny colleagues. Her job includes both standard desk work and attending at various businesses and facilities for safety audits. Having been with the team for over a year, she is a hard-working, well-valued employee.

Personality: Rachel is noted for her laid-back and easy-going attitude, generally being slow to anger or agitation. She is adaptable to changing circumstances and tends to go with the flow, allowing her companions to set the tone of interactions provided things remain relatively under control. Despite this, Rachel does have her adventurous side as well, and can at times allow herself to get into dangerous situations, especially when she becomes swayed by those with less concern for her personal safety. She also has a tendency to snark easily, which can at times cause trouble with those prone to offence.

Self-identifying as asexual, Rachel had never had a romantic relationship before she met Dawn, and in that instance it was Dawn that initiated. Due to this, she is usually oblivious to anyone but her girlfriend flirting with her or having a crush on her. She does otherwise tend to pick up on others having a positive or negative opinion towards her.

Interaction with Unaffected: Rachel is comfortable with most Unaffected due to being raised around them since birth, as both friends and family. She generally does not have any fear of Unaffected, though she retains a healthy respect for the threat they can pose where they have a less than positive view of Tinies, or herself specifically. Her default assumption is that Unaffected she does not know will not attempt to harm her, relying on observation to identify potential threats from unknowns, which is not always reliable.

Rachel is not much of an activist when it comes to Tiny rights, though she does her part to support the status-quo of equal rights for all, and will generally argue back against anyone who expresses overtly anti-Tiny views. She’ll support other activists if asked, but for the most part feels it is best not to deliberately provoke reactions from opponents.

Key Relationships: Rachel has a relatively extensive social network of family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, but like anyone she is closer to some than others.

Rachel’s significant other is her girlfriend Dawn Bailey, an Unaffected woman she first met at university when she was assigned as a mentor for the younger student. Though Dawn was the one who asked Rachel out, their relationship remains mutual. Although Rachel physical attraction to Dawn (or anyone) is more aesthetic than sexual she loves her girlfriend in her own way, and values her companionship, despite the semi-frequent hardships she has endured due both to Dawn’s clumsiness and her family’s actions. Recently Rachel has begun to wonder if she should be proactive and suggest marriage.

Within her family, Rachel has a particularly close bond with her mother and her sisters. While Emily aims to treats all of her children equally, she’s always had a special place in her heart for her Tiny daughter, and Rachel was often taken everywhere by her mother as a child. Though she’s enforced some distance for her own independence the two are still very close, and Rachel still instinctively goes to her mother for support and comfort. Her bond with Lilian is equally as strong, with the two perhaps the closest of all their siblings, although she does find the older woman overbearing at times. Her relationship with the often bratty Gabby has been more complicated, but they remain close sisters.

Rachel’s best friend is Klara Ossler, with the two having been essentially inseparable since their first day in high school. Though Rachel is aware that Klara’s escapades are likely to continue to put her at risk, she trusts her friend implicitly and knows she will protect her when it counts. She is similarly close to her sister-in-law Fidelia, whom she met together with Klara on that first day in high school. Rachel relies on Fidelia as the voice of reason in their friend group, even if she doesn’t always take her sage advice.

A more recent addition to her social circle, Valeria Russel is the best friend of Dawn and an increasingly common part of Rachel’s life. Although Valeria’s persistent need to test her is a consistent annoyance, Rachel is trying her best to get along with the other girl, and feels that deep down she’s not a bad person. Their friendship is still developing.


DAWN BAILEY

Key Facts: Dawn is Rachel’s girlfriend of two years. An Unaffected currently in the final year of her university degree in chemistry, she has recently started an internship with Archon Pharmaceuticals, and is hoping to receive a full-time position after graduating.

A commuting student, Dawn continues to live with her extended family, and spends most of her time when she isn’t working or learning with her family. When she isn’t with her family or Rachel, she can often be found hanging out with her best friend Valeria, with the two enjoying shopping together as well as attending trendy cafes and eateries.

Personality: Dawn has a gentle and loving personality, and is the kind to make casual friends easily, though she saves a special place in her heart for those who are truly important to her. While highly intelligent, Dawn can be somewhat clumsy and naive, and can often be too quick to trust in the words of others, leading to misunderstandings. She is also highly protective of those she cares about, and may sometimes lash out against perceived threats to loved ones without taking the time to fully understand the situation. She is particularly protective of her sisters and younger cousin, whom she dotes on.

Interactions with Tinies: Raised in a family consisting only of Unaffected, Dawn did not have much exposure to Tinies (or other Reduced) until she began attending university. Growing up, her mother Eve taught her that all Tinies were inferior to Unaffected, and should be tolerated and helped as needed but never deferred to. Despite this, Dawn has grown increasingly fond of Tinies as she has been further exposed to them, particularly after meeting and falling for Rachel, and would now consider herself a firm ally of Tinies.

While Dawn always means well, her affectionate nature and some ingrained lessons about Tiny inferiority can lead to her being overly protective and patronising to Tinies. When unclear on the correct course of action concerning Tinies, she will usually defer to Rachel for advice, but if Rachel is not available she will seek assistance elsewhere. Invariably, she seeks this assistance from her family and other Unaffected she trusts.

Lacking the instincts of those who grew up around Tinies, Dawn commonly forgets to carefully check her surroundings when in mixed-sized areas, which has led to more than a few accidental squishings. She is always deeply apologetic for these instances, but has shown limited growth towards preventing them, and is frequently unaware that a Tiny has become adhered to her person or possessions until alerted by someone else.

Relationship with Rachel: Dawn is strongly in love with Rachel. The two met when Rachel was assigned to assist Dawn as part of a university buddy program. Though initially wary of being partnered with a Tiny, Dawn in time came to appreciate Rachel’s guidance and tolerance for her slip-ups. This eventually led to romantic feelings and Dawn confessed these feelings to Rachel when the buddy program was concluding.

Despite the limitations presented by their size difference, Dawn enjoys being physically affectionate with Rachel, and often choses to carry Rachel on her person when the two are on dates or otherwise together. Though always intending to take great care of her Tiny girlfriend in these situations, her lack of experience can lead to Dawn becoming mildly inattentive, which sometimes leads to issues should she be suitably distracted. Many dates between the two have ended with Dawn returning home forgetting that she was even with her girlfriend, with Rachel either trapped on her person or left behind.

Dawn is fully aware that some members of her family are not fond of the idea of her dating a Tiny like Rachel. Although she disagrees with, and has argued against, this attitude, she is confident that none of them would actively harm Rachel or take any direct action to drive her Tiny girlfriend away, believing they will respect her choices. So far she has been largely correct in this assumption, but only time will tell if that holds true as it becomes increasingly apparent that the relationship is more than just a phase.

Key Facts: Emily is Rachel’s mother and the matriarch of the Role family. Having served as a soldier in the Victory Pact during the Vixmite Invasion, Emily retired following the end of hostilities, and spent several years focused on raising her children. More recently she has returned to the workforce, working for the Guardianship Administration Agency.

A devoted parent, Emily is close to the other mothers in the neighbourhood, forming an unofficial mother’s group. She also remains close to her sister and other former Victory Pact comrades, though her relationship with her mother is strained. Miyoko Aki is her adoptive daughter, but the dynamic between the two is much closer to that of sisters.

Personality: A kind and affectionate woman, Emily usually does not show hostility to anyone, and is willing to listen attentively to others. That said, she can be stubborn when it comes to her values and beliefs, and is unlikely to change her opinion easily. Under her calm exterior she is fiercely protective of her loved-ones, particularly her children, and is not above taking steps to settle the score with anyone who harms them.

Though Emily used to be keen on fitness, she let herself slip slightly while raising her children, and has recently started trying to get back into a dedicated fitness routine.

Interactions with Tinies: Emily loves Tinies very much, and will always seek to protect and do right by them, including by respecting their personal wishes. Even so, as they have been a constant part of her life for decades now, she has grown a little complacent around them, sometimes causing her to zone out and not take the care that she should. Even Emily’s own children are not necessarily safe around her should she be distracted.

Tinies are not immune to Emily’s vengeance should she believe they have harmed her children in any way, and she will not hesitate to use her size to punish such individuals.

Relationship with Rachel: Emily loves Rachel as much as any of her children, and has always done her best to protect her from any threats. When Rachel was younger she was taken by Emily almost everywhere. As with her sons, there are times when Emily wonders if Rachel would be safest being kept close to her at all times, but she is also proud of what Rachel has achieved and wants to see her grow and flourish. Emily is concerned what will happen if Rachel moves out, but remains supportive for now.


LILIAN ROLE

Key Facts: Lilian is Rachel’s oldest sister, the second oldest and de-factor leader of the five Role siblings. A constable in the Public Protection Bureau, Lilian mainly works as a uniformed general-duties patrol officer, though has and is pursuing relevant courses to specialise in Reduced-related crimes (both those committed against and by Reduced).

Lilian is married to Rachel’s high school friend Fidelia Laguna, and the two of them live with the rest of the Role family while considering their options and saving up for a home. She gets along well with her siblings in general, though she has mild animosity with her older brother Wade, due to his refusal to abide her instructions and difficult behaviour.

Personality: Lilian has a strong and forthright personality, consistently willing to speak her mind and challenge situations she finds unacceptable. Though she has made effort over time to curtail such outbursts in professional settings, they still leak out at times. Like her mother, she is fiercely protective of her loved-ones, including by use of force.

Her job requires Lilian to keep in shape, so she has a dedicated fitness routine, and will invite her siblings to join her either at the gym or for outside activities like jogs and rides.

Interactions with Tinies: To Lilian, the protection of Tinies, and Reduced in general, is her life’s calling. Having grown up looking out for her smaller siblings, she was both their protector and their disciplinarian, taking steps to curb the more problematic behaviours of her siblings where Emily was unwilling to act and Mason was restricted by his size. She believes that Unaffected have a duty to look out for their smaller companions, but also believes that Tinies need to take responsibility for their own safety and wellbeing.

Observant, Lilian is generally unlikely to squish anyone unless significantly distracted or angered to the extent of pushing aside her inhibitions, such as anyone threatening her small siblings or perving on her wife, younger sister, or other Unaffected loved-one.

Relationship with Rachel: Lilian is the closest sibling to Rachel on a personal level, with the two having often teamed up to wrangle their younger siblings into compliance. She loves Rachel deeply, though can sometimes be a little over-protective of her, such as attempting to prevent her from engaging in activities she considers to be unwise.


GABBY ROLE

Key Facts: Gabby is Rachel’s younger sister and the youngest of the five Role siblings. A university freshman, she is studying education with the goal of becoming a primary school teacher for Unaffected students. She works part-time at the local Penny’s.

A dedicated extrovert, Gabby spends a lot of time hanging out with her various friends or on dates with her Tiny boyfriend Brodie. When she isn’t at university or out socialising she can be found lazing around in her room or watching various reality TV programs.

Personality: Unfortunately Gabby has never quite grown-out of being a child and can come across as quite bratty, particularly when she does not get her way. She can also be fairly vain, confident in her own attractiveness and charm points. Despite this, she isn’t fundamentally a bad person, and is capable of being genuinely compassionate.

Interactions with Tinies: Gabby’s relationship with Tinies is complicated. On the one hand, having been raised in a mixed-size family she fully accepts all Reduced as being deserving of equal rights and opportunities. She is even dating a Tiny and her feelings towards Brodie are genuine, if a little dominate. However, this has never stopped Gabby from taking advantage of her size to get her way when she feels she can get away with it. To Gabby, it is only fair that she take advantage of her size to get the things she desires.

Though Gabby never intends to cause any serious harm to any Tinies, she is not above ‘punishing’ those that do not comply with her often selfish wishes, and has been known to overestimate the capacity of Tinies to get out of trouble on their own. This has led to pranks and punishments going further than intended, often without Gabby’s knowledge.

Relationship with Rachel: Gabby respects and loves Rachel as her older sister, but this hasn’t prevented her from sometimes taking advantage of their size disparity to order her smaller sibling around, or from punishing her for non-compliance. Generally, she has a better relationship with Rachel than her brothers, and punishes her the least. If anything, Rachel is the Tiny she listens to the most, even more than their father Mason.


KLARA OSSLER

Key Facts: Klara is Rachel’s best friend, with the two having met at their mixed-size high school. An engineer by trade, Klara is employed by Pathfinder Constructions, where she works as a junior on-site engineer. She is aiming to become an engineering consultant.

Klara comes from a single-parent household, with her mother having children through a series of donors. She is the second-born of three daughters, and also has a younger Tiny brother, who is both the only male and only Tiny in the family. Though currently single, she is keen to obtain a Tiny boyfriend of her own, and is now considering online dating.

Personality: Klara has a spontaneous and playful personality, and is often the kind to act first and consider the consequences later. She also tends to involve her friends in her escapades, convincing them to join in her reckless behaviour, though she won’t force them to participate if they truly wish to be left alone. Though not clumsy, she does have a tendency to get in over her head, resulting in her plans frequently going awry.

Klara consistently keeps her naturally black hair dyed, usually green but other colours when she feels like mixing things up a bit, and always something outside the norm.

Interactions with Tinies: Klara is a firm ally of Tinies due both to her love for her little brother, and her strong relationship with Rachel. She will always act to protect Tinies that she perceives as being threatened or harmed, though can differ from many others in regard to whether a particular situation is generally dangerous or a fun adventure.

Any Tiny drawn into Klara’s orbit needs to take care to ensure they clearly communicate their preference and limitations, less they find themselves indirectly volunteering to engage in some form of extreme activity that may end up leaving them worse for wear.

Relationship with Rachel: Klara and Rachel’s friendship is close and strong, with both considering the other to be their best friend. For Klara’s part, she considers Rachel to be an irreplaceable part of her life and always goes to her first when she has an idea for fun that requires a Tiny participant. Her various escapades have sometimes gotten both of them into trouble, particularly during high school, but Klara would never intentionally harm Rachel. Outings with Rachel can involve stunts such as Klara tying Rachel to her skateboard or rollerblades, taking her Tiny friend sky-diving, or playing pranks on Fidelia.


FIDELIA LAGUNA

Key Facts: Fidelia is Rachel’s sister-in-law, having married the previous year, though she was first Rachel’s close friend, with the two having met in high school. She is studying to become a doctor, with the aim of specialising in Tiny health, and has commenced an internship at the Unity City Central Hospital, alongside ongoing post-graduate studies.

Fidelia now lives in the Role household with Lilian, though the two are looking to obtain their own home. She previously lived with her single father Santino Laguna who, as a Tiny, struggled to raise an Unaffected daughter, though they retain a close relationship.

Personality: Fidelia is a soft-spoken young woman who is unfailingly kind and polite to almost everyone she meets, and always wants to believe the best about people. That said, her calm exterior belies the hidden depths of righteous anger she can unleash against anyone who takes an action or expresses an opinion she finds reprehensible. Provided she has not been angered, she is a highly careful and observant individual.

Interactions with Tinies: Fidelia is very fond and protective of Tinies. Having been raised by her father she has no time for those she views as mistreating Tinies and will act without hesitation to protect them. However, she has one exception to this mindset.

When she was young Fidelia witnessed her father being falsely accused of perversion and punished by several indignant women. While angry with those who had falsely levelled the accusation, Fidelia also developed contempt for Tinies who, due to their own perversions, allowed such attitudes to spread. If she believes she has caught a Tiny being perverted she will go to great lengths to correct them, blind to her own hypocrisy.

Relationship with Rachel: Fidelia is quite fond of Rachel, as both her friend and more recently her sister-in-law. The two continue to socialise often either with just the two of them or with Klara and/or Lilian, and have an easy-going friendship. She is often the voice of reason when Klara comes up with an outlandish idea that could risk Rachel’s safety, though her advice is not always taken. Despite, or because of, this closeness, Fidelia would be quick to ‘correct’ Rachel if she felt she ever slipped into perversion.


VALERIA RUSSEL

Key Facts: Valeria is the best friend of Dawn Bailey, as well as her next-door neighbour, with the two having known each other since childhood. Like Dawn, she is in her final year of her university degree, in her case studying fashion. She works part time at a New Aged Designs store, and aims to be hired as a designer at the company after graduation.

Valeria lives with her single mother, with her father having abandoned the family when she was a baby (at least according to her mother). Her aunt also lives with them, but is usually away from home due to being a serving member of the UTC Armed Services.

Personality: Raised strictly by her single mother, Valeria has a forthright and unyielding personality, generally being completely unwilling to change her perspective once she has made a decision. She considers herself to be the protector of the more sensitive and innocent Dawn, feeling that she needs to vet anyone who tries to get close to her.

Valeria dyes her hair pink at all times, and consistently sports piercings, though mostly on her ears. Her mother considers this a small rebellion, but Valeria just likes the look.

Interactions with Tinies: Valeria generally has a negative, though not outright hostile, attitude towards Tinies (and Reduced in general). She believes that people should be treated with a degree of respect in accordance with their contributions to society, and that Tinies are fundamentally unable to contribute as much as Unaffected are. Due to this she also frowns upon mixed-size relationships, believing that a Tiny partner will only diminish their Unaffected partner. She has had little direct contact with Tinies in her life.

Relationship with Rachel: Although she doesn’t specifically dislike Rachel herself, Valeria feels the need to test her frequently, believing that if Rachel is truly worthy of Dawn then she will past the tests. These tests can include both requesting Rachel to complete certain challenges, and deliberately placing her in complicated situations. In these instances, Valeria expects Rachel to achieve the same results as an Unaffected.

Outside of testing, Valeria is willing to be friendly to Rachel, and in many ways thinks that she is doing the Tiny a favour by ensuring she can survive Dawn. In some ways she is even growing fond of Rachel, though she’s not quite willing to admit that out loud yet.
