Noire uses his magic against wolf and man. 300-word flash |
| Wolfen Magic Ancient legends tell us about a black wolf who can do dark magic. The first time he did, he doomed himself. It was eons ago that the last black wolf magician walked the earth. Noire was a huge specimen of his kind, and his magic was strong. So was his arrogance. “I consider the wolf a better creature to rule the world. Man is puny and helpless without artificial weapons. We, as a species are eminently suited to rule the earth,” he announced to his pack and any others too. One Halloween, he decided to prove it. He began to conjure early in the day, mixing and stirring a potion to turn man into a wolf. Finally satisfied, he asked for volunteers from among the local wolves. They resisted the idea and thought it crazy. Giving up on getting wolves to test on, Noire, like many scientists have done in the past, decided he was the best subject for his own spell. With a burst of purple smoke and orange fire, he bespelled himself. To his dismay, he became a man. “I have failed. I have become one of those human weaklings!” he ranted, pacing his cave. He lived in misery until the night of the full moon. As he watched it rise, he could feel himself changing. His ears grew long and hair covered. His body also developed familiar wolf hair. His claws grew back on hands and feet. Exiting his stone prison, Noire stretched out his neck and howled. He went down on all fours and began to run in a hunting lope. He found human prey quickly and slaked his hunger. Returning to his cave, he lay down and slept. The next morning, he awoke and was a human man once more. He sighed sadly. |
