| It Made Her Day “What do you want for Christmas?” Mrs. Myers asked her class. Hands flew up, as expected from second graders The kids were always just like this, always so excited. She started picking the kids out one by one. Toys, sleds, books. As the room full of waving hands started to get under control, she noticed Annie had not put her hand up. Not wanting to draw attention to her, she waited. Recess was about to start, as she finished calling on hands. They would all rush off to talk about what they wanted now that it was brought up. As the kids all excitedly left for recess, she caught Annie. “Annie, can I have you a minute?” Annie walked over. “Annie, why didn’t you tell everybody what you wanted for Christmas,” she asked. “I didn’t want to talk about it… was that, ok?” “Yes Honey, you don’t have to tell people what you think about. I just wanted to make sure you were OK. You do celebrate Christmas at your house, don’t you?” “Yes! But we haven’t got our tree up yet because…” she hesitated. “What Honey?” Mrs. Myers asked. “My Mom is in the hospital.” “Oh Honey! I’m so sorry! I didn’t know. Why is she?” “She is having trouble with my brother.” “You have a brother? I didn’t know that.” “That’s because he hasn’t been born yet.” “Oh! And your mom is in the hospital…?” “Waiting for him to be born!” Suddenly a man ran into the room. “Annie!” “Grampa?” “Your mother just had your brother! They’re fine! Let’s go see them!!!” “My Christmas wish came true!” Annie said, running to go with her grandfather. Mrs. Myers smiled thinking that that was the best Christmas wish she’d ever heard from a student. It made her day. |
