When I hear the word “India” it conjures the most incredible images in my mind. Even though I have never visited her in person, part of me still thinks of her as a home of sorts. The people I’ve met have been gracious and kind; the ancient lessons that come from India have opened my mind and taught me many things, the food from her bounty had filled up my belly. Never before have I felt so connected to a place, a people and a civilization as I have India.
As an outsider, it feels strange to say that. As an outsider from the United States it feels even stranger to say that. As an American we are taught to have pride in our country, and we are very boastful about it. When I began learning about India, I liked discovering for myself all of her talents and beauty. She did not need to scream from the mountaintops how wonderful she was, it was all there for anybody with eyes to see for themselves.
I have learned so much from India about peace, civilization, struggle, humanity and spirituality that I am forever grateful. I hope to learn more and one day go there myself and thank the country that has given me so much, in person.
