I Can't Write a Poem

Write a line of prose I can
Do with no stress or strain
But when I sit to write a poem
A frost forms on my brain

A story flows from my head
Like the deluge of a river
My fingers can’t keep pace with
The thoughts my mind deliver

Stanza and rhyme get in the way
Of a good tale to tell, but
When I try to put it in verse
I feel like I’m writing in Hell

Iambic pentameter, dactylic tetrameter
It’s all Greek to me
Poetry is much too technical
Simplicity, must be the key

Rhyming words is hard to do
It takes cunning and takes wit
I have a thought and type it out
But the rhymes refuse to fit

A poem should sing, a poem should flow
Like a sweet song in a breeze
But every poem I try to pen
It sings with a rasping wheeze

I can’t write a poem it seems
It is just not in the cards
I’ll stick to writing stories
And leave the poems to the bards
