I have been so much and seen so little,
All but force has pushed me over some;
As a fighter—as a poet—
Only love has made me ever be numb.
An indefinite power that holds me down,
As I scamper about throughout the town;
Sadly I’ve seen too many couples fall,
No single one wears the crown.
A habit of staring has led me astray.
Many times I have found myself called a-low;
And perhaps forty times a second I have fallen,
But never fast—I sink in slow.
I wish I could explain my beating rhythm,
As it takes on a force over me.
It’s neigh to arousal of the sense,
Something deeper than most can see.
I’ve written this it seems a thousand times,
As each new infatuation takes me hold;
And all for this there is just one love,
I have ever found worth be told.
