To escape pursuing Indians, Capt. Sam Brady jumped 22 feet across a river.
Brady's Leap

Captain Samuel Brady crossed the Delaware River with George Washington after joining the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. When his brother and father were killed by Indians, Brady vowed to take revenge on Indian warriors until they stopped attacking white settlements.

He became famous as an Indian fighter and formed a company of men called "Brady's Rangers" operating out of Fort Pitt. Because of an Indian attack on a white settlement, his Rangers went on an expedition to retaliate. They met up with the Indians in what is now Kent, Ohio. The Indians were camped there, by the Cuyahoga River.

In the middle of the river was (and still is) a huge rock called "Standing Rock". The Rangers set an ambush for the Indians, which included Brady showing himself as "bait". The ambush was successful, but in the ensuing retreat, the Indians concentrated on chasing Brady because of his fame as a warrior. They wanted to capture and torture him.

He escaped by jumping over the Cuyahoga River at a spot that was about 22 feet wide at that time and is located in present day downtown Kent, Ohio. That spot is known as "Brady's Leap" today.
