The Apple of Immortality
The young frail girl reached out with
Her pale fragile hand,
And grasped the beautiful green apple
In the branches above her head.

She plucked it with tenderness,
And carressed its soft flesh with her cold fingertips.
The deliciously green apple called her name,
And through the trance of hunger she took a bite.

She chewed thoughfully, tasting each and every bit
Of the Apple she held in her delicate hands.
It was the most wonderful thing that she had ever tasted,
Though she couldn't quite remember what else she had eaten.

The second bite of the Apple was just as
Exquisitely sweet and just as delighfully tangy as the first.
She chewed gratefully, as the songs of paradise
Filled her belly with their music.

She embraced the melody with another bite and another,
Until the delectable Apple was gone from her sight.
She looked around the tree, for another just as perfect,
But she could find no other that met it in excellency.

She stood for a moment, her belly protesting for more,
Until she saw a light in the corner of her eye.
She turned with grace that denied her pale form.
She tilted her head and walked towards the object of her attentions.

Once the light receeded from the area,
All that remained was the core of the Apple
Long since forgotten by the joys of flavor
And wonder of the girl who disappeared.
