A childrens story encouraging friendship with everyone. |
Won First Place
Bippard the bunny was out in the sun. His bunny friends and he were having some fun. When Melody Mouse wanted to play, Some bunnies said “NO!” and pushed her away. Then Bippard stepped in, “That’s not very nice. Anyone can play, whether bunnies or mice.” “She’s not our kind!” the other bunnies said. “No, you’re all wrong.” Bippard was shaking his head. “I would play with anyone, I really don’t mind. People are people, we are all one kind.” Blossom Bunny stepped forward and spoke up... “Would you sit with a turtle, have tea in a cup?” “Yes, I’d sit with a turtle and drink some tea. Turtles are people; it wouldn’t bother me! Why, I’d offer a seat to a passing owl, And if he spilled his tea I’d give him my towel.” There were mumblings from bunnies all around, When Bopper jumped up, stomping his foot on the ground. “Having tea with a turtle is all very nice. But to change my mind, that won’t suffice! So tell me now, tell me if you will, Would you, could you, play King of the Hill? Perhaps play with a badger or maybe a fox. Would you play King of the Hill on top of the rocks?” Bippard stood tall with his ears in the air. “Why wouldn’t I? Would they not play fair? I would play with the badger, even the fox. I think we’d have fun on top of those rocks. I’d sit with the turtle and drink some tea. Give a towel to an owl; he’d do it for me! I can play with anyone, I really don’t mind. People are people, we are all one kind.” There were now some bunnies starting to see, Bippard’s words were true, you have to agree. Then out came Billiam from the rear of the pack, He walked up to Bippard and put his hand on his back. “So you say you will play with anyone at all. Would it matter to you if they were short or tall? Say there was a day, maybe sometime in May, When you didn’t have anywhere to play Would you talk to a frog sitting on a log? Or maybe go jogging with a big brown dog? Tell me, would you do that, Bippard Bunny? Don't you think it would look kind of funny?” “Funny?” Bippard said, looking at bunny smiles. “Why I would jog with that dog for eight or nine miles And sitting with a frog on a log might seem quite funny, But I bet it would be great if the day were sunny. I would play with the badger, even the fox. Play King of the Hill on top of the rocks. I’d sit with the turtle and drink some tea. Give a towel to an owl; he’d do it for me! I can play with anyone, I really don’t mind. People are people, we are all one kind.” Melody Mouse now said to all, (She had to talk loud because mice are so small!) “I didn’t mean to cause such a stir But I have a question for you, kind sir. If you had some cheese, maybe one slice, Would you share it with all of the mice? As we jumped and played in the tall green grass, Would you share it, sir, if it were your last?” Bippard looked at Melody and touched her head, He smiled very wide and then he said, “It would be a pleasure to share all my cheese, As long as you ask nicely, and don’t forget to say please. Then we could play together in the tall grass. Maybe Hide-n-Go-Seek, that would be a blast! I would jog with a dog for more than a mile. To talk with a frog on a log would make me smile. I would play with a badger, even a fox. Play King of the Hill on top of the rocks. I’d sit with the turtle and drink some tea. Give a towel to an owl; he’d do it for me! I can play with anyone, I really don’t mind. People are people, we are all one kind.” “What about birds?” someone shouted. Bippard could not believe that someone still doubted. He looked around and it caught his eye, A bird on a limb had come down from the sky. “Yes, I’d play with birds, at least on the ground, If I tried to fly, I would only fall down. I’d play with the mice, share all my cheese, As long as they were nice, and always said please. I would jog with a dog for more than a mile. Talk with a frog on a log it would make me smile. I would play with a badger, even a fox. Play King of the Hill on top of the rocks. I’d sit with the turtle and drink some tea. Give a towel to an owl; he’d do it for me! I can play with anyone, I really don’t mind. People are people, we are all one kind.” Well, Bippard looked up; there now was a crowd. He held his head high, feeling quite proud. There were foxes and frogs, birds and mice. Everyone was talking and acting so nice. Then some bunnies said, “We should go play. Why are we standing here talking all day? We can all play together, we really shouldn’t mind. After all, people are people, we are all one kind.” |
