A poem about disullusionment with the modern world
Distopia Files.
.
I squint at the matrix of buildings in the distance
There is nothing for me there
I have walked among them and become lost
Unable to fathom the meanings etched in blood and stone.
.
A vast network of machines is evident
Tearing up the planet violently and chaotically
The blind ambition of humanity holds the world in thrall
And all things mortal and beautiful slowly but surely lose ground.
.
I pull my insides out and arrange them
In a feeble attempt to impose order
The chaos of natural position is better
Constantly surprising us with its subtlety.
.
Some days there is only a drone of white noise
Nothing substantive percolates from this morass.
I wish my existence were more colourful and vibrant
But being myself is denied me by divisive forces.
.
There was love once, my heart was alive
And there was music and laughter;
But in the grey death that followed your departure
I grew thin and miserable, my faith chipped and stained.
.
My history is an embarrassment to me
But I grit my teeth and plough on regardless
There is nothing to complain about
The choices we make are immutable demons.
.
Where does the ambition go?
Aye, it is in line with the heat death of the universe.
Still I want to keep my days full
Even as my energies seem hardly sufficient.
.
Black clouds swirl and churn up the sky
The elemental urges fight for supremacy
And insignificant Man cowers in fear
Wondering desperately at his fate.
.
