The character of Death intrigued me, not only the office of Death, but the person who becomes immersed in the position. It made me wonder what I would do in the same situation.

continue the series. This is the first of Peirs Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality, which focus on a different "Incarnation" in each installment.

Sad (more on that later in my review). I thought this would be a lighthearted, fun read with some laughs. I had read much of Peirs Anthony's Magic of Xanth series and thought this would be similar. I found it much more serious, though.

Piers Anthony (from the Author's Note at the end of the book) wrote this novel when he had his own brushes with mortality, as he faced a medical issue soon after his father-in-law had a close brush with death followed by the sudden illness and death of his mother-in-law.

It's an interesting read that will make you think about the nature of life and death and perhaps consider being a better person.

My reading of this book was affected greatly by the sudden passing of my own mother, which may have caused the somber mood during my reading of this book. It did help me to read about a compassionate Death, though. I found that comforting at that difficult time, and I did enjoy the book.
