Summary of this DVD... | ||
This movie was part of the best year in movies - 1939. It was the year of Gone With the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I am trying to see as many movies as I can from 1939. This was part of that effort. The story is about a society horseriding woman, who becomes ill. She has a brain tumor. Her cancer doctor falls in love with her and tries to conceal the fact that she is about to die. She finds out, throws a fit, gets drunk, and spends some time sulking, then realizes she loves her doctor. She marries him, they are deliriously happy and then she dies. This was a disappointment. It is dated and to be frank, Bette Davis overacts a lot. I have seen her when she was far better than this. She really hams it up. Being bitter about losing out on the part of Scarlett in Gone With the Wind comes through here. The cast is interesting, with Humphrey Bogart trying to speak with an Irish Brogue and Ronald Reagan as a drunk young man, who is a friend of the Judith Traherne, the Bette Davis character.
I especially liked... | ||
Ronald Reagan as the drunk guy. He did a pretty good job with the role.
I didn't like... | ||
Humphrey Bogart with an Irish brogue. He looks angry about having to play the part. It is a ridiculous part for him to try and portray. That comes through in every move he makes and everything he says.
