Summary of this DVD... | ||
This was an unexpectedly GREAT movie! We saw a preview of it and got it from Netflix disk to watch. It came out in 2015. It is the story of a woman, Maria Altmann, whose Jewish family lived in Vienna Austria. When Hitler and his Nazis took over, she and her husband had to flee but a good number of her family (parents included) stuck around to meet their deaths at Nazi hands. The family had a number of very valuable paintings that were confiscated, including a painting of her Aunt, called, "Woman in Gold" that in 1998 hangs in a main art gallery in Vienna, owned by the state. She enlists the help of an unsuccessful Jewish Lawyer (played by Ryan Reynolds) in L.A. to help her get it back. They win the first decision in the favor of Jewish owners of stolen (Nazi confiscated) art in the world. This is a true case that set a precedent for seeking justice even many decades after the wrong was done. The film was inspiring and wonderful. Elizabeth McGovern (of Downton Abbey) has a small role as a judge. Her husband is the Director. Ryan Reynolds is marvelous and I don't normally like him. Helen Mirren is her wonderful, usual self. This is a GREAT movie. LOVED IT and so did Mr. Hooves!
I especially liked... | ||
that it was a true story and in the end Austrian officials had to eat dirt. Good deal.
I didn't like... | ||
antisemitic scenes, but they are part of the story.
I recommend this DVD because...
this was such a good story and so well acted that I may end up buying it. I hope it is noticed at the Oscars because the performances are first rate. Bravo! Katie Holmes has a good part as Ryan Reynolds' wife.
