4.5-ish stars, but closer to 5 than 4. This is one of the best researched and up-to-date books on the subject matter. It doesn't just apply to RA (though that is the focus of the research included), it is also very useful to anyone with an autoimmune disorder - as many of these dangers cross over the same way the diseases do (for example, I fluctuated with a diagnosis of psoriatic vs rheumatoid for a bit, but the treatments were identical, as were many of the symptoms and dangers.) My biggest concern with the book, despite my firm belief that Kelly has done a huge service the entire community, is that I have been 5+ years in this ongoing nonsensical and evil-spirited disease. I knew most of the future risks from excessive reading about it; Kelly has summarized it nicely here. So for someone like me, who already "knows" or "gets it", who has the day-to-day swings and various chronic symptoms, having such a wealth of real, solid, current research is a fabulous and much needed find. That being said, if I had grabbed this book when I was newly diagnosed, I fear I would have been damn near despondent. That is not Kelly fault and it does not change the reality and necessity of this information. The statistics are not great, but true. The dangers are terrifying, but true. What I'm telling you is: if you are newly diagnosed, I still believe you need to read this book, but your life is not over. The information in here will help you advocate for your plan of care, and be an active participant in your treatment, which you must be. But please, PLEASE, use this as positive tool - you have a road map and some realistic expectations, but you will soldier on. I hope she intends to update the book at least occasionally, because it is that much of a gem of a work. I am fortunate to have access to medical journals, etc. This book is a godsend for those who are not, and even if the chapters were identical with new studies provided, I'd buy it again. And I 100% agree the damn name should be changed from "arthritis". It's only one symptom of a complex disease, plus I'm so tired of people telling me "oh, I have arthritis in my shoulder, have you tried extra-strength Advil?". All my love to my fellow Rheumies. Get the book. | ||
