What an incredibly wild ride! “The Silent Patient” is so smart in each of its twists and turns. Red Herrings are everywhere, but the truth is so well-hidden in plain sight, I was absolutely thrown for a loop when it was finally revealed. Throughout the book, I thought I had the mystery figured out a few different times, but the truth the author revealed was more of a shock than anything I could have predicted. The story was beautifully crafted with enough detail for the most perceptive detective readers to investigate the mystery along with the narrator, but I believe everyone will be thrilled and surprised by the climax. My jaw literally hung open in shock when I read it, and I hope you too will have that experience. Backing up a bit, the book tells the story of a psychotherapist treating a woman accused of brutally murdering her husband and has refused to speak since that day. She is the silent patient and the therapist narrator becomes obsessed with discovering her motive. The book is both a detective mystery and a psychological thriller, but in an interview, the author also described it as “quite a sad story.” I agree that the story is heartbreaking in a way, but so well-told, I couldn’t peel myself away. If you have the option, I would recommend the audiobook version of this book as it includes an exclusive interview with the author at the end. In addition, the two narrators bring so much energy to the story. Very well done. | ||
