“Wishtree” is a beautiful book for young readers. I read it in one day because the story was so finely crafted and the characters were so relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed the simple structure of the plot, which may be an uncommon thing for a writer to say, but it’s true. The conflict was so well-defined it was refreshing to feel it carry the story. On top of the craft of the story itself, the book covers many important topics for all of us, not merely the intended youth audience of this book. Themes of belonging, friendship, inclusion, diversity, the American Dream, family, tradition, tolerance, death, and life’s purpose are all explored and tied neatly into the story. I cried and cheered and laughed along with the characters. It was pure and simple – an enjoyable read. | ||
