Adam Savage’s first book, “Every Tool’s a Hammer,” is a great insight into the mind of a maker, and an accomplished, career maker at that. Savage, one half of the dynamic “Mythbusters” duo from the Discovery Channel, shares a lot of great insights into the art and creativity of making along with many personal stories in this book. It reads like a how-to guide and a memoir combined in one. I enjoyed how Savage gave credit where credit was due and shared many of the lessons he had learned from other makers throughout his years. I also enjoyed very much how Savage has an understanding of many different types of making. Not simply construction and model making, but anything from pottery to even writing! There is something for everyone in this book. I’ve already taken some of Savage’s advice and incorporated it into my own process. Another very cool aspect of this book are the numerous photographs and hand-sketches! It’s quite inspirational to see the photo series showcasing Savage’s work spaces throughout his career. He talks a lot about how his “Cave” (current workshop) is just the newest iteration of many many shops before and a combination of all the best parts of previous shops without any of the worst. It shows how anyone who takes the time to work at something they enjoy can become good at it through practice and trial and error. Overall, a good book and worth a read, even for us writers. | ||
