“The Omnivore’s Dilemma” is not a new book, but it is certainly an important one. Whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, meat eater, or true omnivore, this book will make you think about how your food goes from where it was grown or raised to your plate. This is something we so seldom think about with the prevalence and ease of fast food, soft drinks, and microwave dinners, but once you start thinking about it, it will be hard to look away. The agriculture big business industry has such a stranglehold on our food systems that it is hard to imagine a world without those players behind the scenes, but The Omnivore’s Dilemma urges us to try. The book explores factory farming, industrial scale meat slaughter houses, organic farms, local organic farms, and even self-sufficient hunter/gatherer style eating. There is so much more that goes into making the food we eat than we even realize, and the book makes it clear that there isn’t a specific “right” diet to eat, but emphasizes your conscious choices to support industry farming or local farming by “voting with your fork” are truly a way to make change. Overall, very interesting book by an author with good storytelling skills and an easy to read style. | ||
