Summary of this DVD... | ||
Red Joan tells the story of an English Woman in her 80's who is suddenly arrested one day, accused of being a Russian spy during the second World War. As the story unfolds, we learn how a young "Joan" was studying at Cambridge University when she unwittingly became friends with a group of students who were communists. Through them, Joan, who is a talented scientist, secures a job at a secret nuclear research facility in the late 1930's. At first she is just an assistant, but when her boss discovers her talent, she becomes pivotal in the creation of the world's first nuclear bomb - something which later put her in a very difficult moral position....
This type of DVD is good for...
Watching alone or with friends at home
I especially liked... | ||
The way the story flicked between the past and the present day, which keeps you guessing until the end about what actually happened. I also liked how the character of Joan was portrayed, and the fact that she is a strong female at a time when the World was much more male dominated.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Find out how closely the film relates to the true story which it is based on and what actually happened.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
Includes Judi Dench who I really like to watch, and I think she portrays the character of the older Joan very well. The younger Joan is played by Sophie Cookson, whom I hadn't heard of.
I recommend this DVD because...
It is interesting to watch and I didn't find that the ending was obvious, so it made you want to keep watching. There is also a scientific element to the film which is interesting too.
