Summary of this Book...
This is a beautiful and poetic account of Maya Angelou's life. I enjoyed the style Maya Angelou chose to write her story. She started with playful, humorous stories of her childhood, then moved to her view of the world around her and her discovery of herself. She introduced us to her absent father, her self-absorbed mother, her loving grandmother (who takes the place of her mother) and her brother she dearly loves and dotes upon. Hers is a story of childhood innocence, family ties, friendships, racial tension, sexual abuse, religion, sexuality, self-discovery and womanhood. Her book is written in her poetic tongue and sprinkled with lines of hymns from her childhood - a beautiful introduction to Maya Angelou.

I would recommend this book, because it is a book of triumph, of overcoming, of inner strength in a harsh world. There's a message in that for all of us.
