The informer Marcus Didius Falco, who describes himself as 'a handsome dog with tousled curls and and endearing grin'. He has recently been promoted to 'Procurator of the Sacred Poultry' and as a side issue has a couple of goslings living in his apartment.




He decides against taking on the young girl's case, instead tying to find out who murdered a man in the Sacred Grove. But the girl disappears, and her strange family are linked in some obscure way with the murdered man. She was after all tipped off to be voted in as the next Vestal Virgin.

The fast-moving pace of the story.


Falco's wit and wry humour.


The interesting mix of fallible, ordinary, weird and homely people in the tale.

That the people in the ancient world were real, with likes, dislikes, intrigues and setbacks. This book is fiction, but it brings to life a long-past age.

I can recommend any of the novels she has written; they are mostly the series about Falco, but one is a novel based on real characters.

It is fun, light reading, with interesting twists to the plot, and some complex, fascinating characters - not all of them likeable.

I read a hardback edition, published in the UK. The cover had a more intersting picture, done to look like a fresco wrapping around the lower part of the book, illustrating one of the more active scenes.
