Yes, I am a Jane Austen addict. I am one of the countless fans who have sat through the six hour movie more times than can be remembered. I was in love with Mr. Darcy since middle school. This has always been my favorite Jane Austen book and has hovered near the top of my All Time Favorites list since I first read it. Austen and Shakespeare don't have a lot in common, but both have a sense of social irony that is so perfect, it lasts forever. She was truly revolutionary in that she modernized the novel form as well as gave women a coherent voice. Her style does take getting used to if you are not used to the classics but it is truly rewarding at the end. I know that not many men jump on the Austen band wagon, maybe because do not find the witty repartee between gentlemen and gentlemen's daughters all that inspiring. To that I say, that it may not appeal to everyone, but Austen did have a specific audience at the time and that was women. I really emphasize putting this in the hands of a child. At 11 I didn't understand all of the intracacies, but Jane Austen and a number of other great classics helped kick on that writer switch. | ||
