Summary of this Book...
David Copperfield, an orphan whose mother dies and leaves him in the hands of his stepfather Murdstone and his cold and cruel sister. David manages to escape and finally ends up under his aunt's care. Later he becomes successful in life due to hard work, marrying Dora, his child-wife, and after her death finding the love of his life. This book, however, is more than just David's life in Victorian times. It is rich with characters whose lives have influenced other writers after Dickens. David's loving but weak mother, button popping Miss Peggoty, the sneaky Uriah Heep, star-crossed couple Emily and Ham, David's friend Steerforth who corrupts Emily, Aunt Betsy's companion Mr. Dick, and many others.
I especially liked... | ||
Uriah Heep's description. In my opinion one of the best villain descriptions in literature is Dickens' Uriah Heep because he is sneaky, showing himself as a useful person at first and then defrauding his boss and his daughter, Agnes, the true love of David.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
re-read other books by Dickens.
This Book made me feel...
Delighted and sad at the same time. I had read this book over and over as a child. I read it now as an adult again and the joy of it was still there.
The author of this Book...
Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), is a sketcher of London life as well as the great dramatist of his time. His other books are Pickwick Papers, Sketches by Boz, Bleak House, A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, Barnaby Rudge, Martin Chuzzlewit, Dombey and Son, Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friend, and Nicholas Nickleby.
I recommend this Book because...
of its characters and its language. As well as its being a drama David Copperfield has comic elements in it that make its reading truly enjoyable.
Further Comments... | ||
It was a delight to read David Copperfield again. For people who like writing I think it is a good idea to reread the classics every now and then.
