a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ransome returning home from the opera one evening and finding everything gone from their home. Everything has been taken from their home all the way to toilet brush and tissues. Without their things, this couple's identity is in question. When their lifetime of accumulations are gone, they go through an internal change themselves until eventually they come across what they've lost, if that would matter anymore. Then other surreal events make them question evertything about themselves. Written as a farce or a fable this short book has concealed depths to shake the reader's reality and entertain at the same time.

Alan Bennett is a British playwright and essayist. Some of his works are, Beyond the Fridge, Habeas Corpus, Forty Years On, The Madness of George III, The Old Country, Kafka's Dick, An Englishman Abroad, and Writing Home. He writes in the London Review of Books.

It is full of wit. Short in stature but longer in meaning, this is a very easily readable novel. Actually I read the entire book in a doctor's waiting room. :)
