William Monk, a detective in Victorian England (around 1856) who wakes up from an injury with no memory of who he is or what his past was. His superior expects him to continue investigating a murder, apparently he was close to the conclusion before the accident that wiped his memory from his brain. How will he find the murderer if he doesn't even know how to do his job anymore?

The way Perry had Monk rediscover himself, step by painful step. I also liked the sharp battles of wit between Monk and Hester. Good dialogue.

A little sad at some points, suspenseful in most of it.

Is a master at working emotion into her stories.

Because it's very good especially if you like historical mysteries.

A few parts of the mystery are confusing if you don't watch for them.

This book is the first in the "William Monk" series but Perry also has another Victorian mystery series (Thomas and Charlotte Pitt) so don't get them confused.
